Hi:

I bought a copy of Win XP Pro at Pantip Plaza to install over the copy of Vista that came on my new PC (I hate Vista). I got it from one of the small vendors, maybe on the third floor, and the sleeve it came in is barely readable. It's got the number Z2072 on the cover but the product key is impossible to read. I didn't think that would mattered, but when I go to install the software it asks for the product key and seems to want the one off the label. Does anyone know if the disks those guys sell need the exact product key listed on them, or will any valid key work for the install process?

Thanks much...

I believe that if you have the legal Vista, then if you phone Microsoft they will give your a free legal XP key, in place of the Vista...

My friend bought a new laptop with a legal Vista installed, could not use his work/office programes on Vista, he phone the FREE number of MS and they gave him the XP legal key..

I suspect they won't let me do that since I got the disk from Pantip and not an authorized retailer. I was just curious if anyone else installed one of those disks and how well the installation process worked... that is, if the key on the label actually functions the way it would with the retail version. I was thinking with a cracked version the key may not really matter, but maybe it does. I was hoping to test it out on an old hard drive first to see if it functions properly but can't get that far yet.

Yes it works, but after the 30days often you will get pop ups + on start up get notice to say you have not the genuine MS Copy…. Warning some of the Copy CDs will not install or have bugs

Of course you will NOT get any Microsoft updates/fixes..

Ask a Thai that uses ‘Copy OS’ and you will find that they reformat there hard drive every few months to keep up-to-date, some of the Copies I understand say No Activation needed, this is because the Trail 30days has been reset..

You can of course buy a genuine key from MS for your copy CD which is cheaper than buying the genuine MS CD + Key

Thanks for your reply. I was mostly first just trying to figure out if the Win XP disk I got at Pantip should be expected to function properly (even short term) with the key that's printed on it. And then secondly I was trying to figure out if that specific key is really required (since I can't read it) or if I could just start the installation using any key. Once I get that figured out I want to do a test install on an old drive before trying anything permanent. I was hoping maybe some other people would have some experience with those disks and might know the installation requirements. I had a fear that the disk I got may have just been a software backup for computers that already had Win XP pre-installed and not a stand-alone disk that you could install from scratch.

The best way is to contact Microsoft and ask for the XP key to replace your Vista installation, which I believe is an option which is still available. There are tools which allow you to amened the key in an existing installation so your 'Pantip' version will become legitimate. Be waned though that many recent versions have lurking Trojans and spyware, so after this step you really need to check the install fully.

Hi :o

First of all it is not allowed to talk about pirated stuff, nevertheless it is very much possible to use pirated Windows, all versions, and receive all updates without any problems whatsoever. And yes, "Panthip" versions usually have the CD key as a .txt file on them - of course you'll need a second, already working, computer to browse the CD with.

Secondly, why XP Professional? XP Home is just as good for the normal user, and it can be bought, perfectly legal, for around 3.000 Baht.

And third - WHAT "office" applications "are not working" under Vista? Because i use Vista and a rather old "Office" version (Office XP) and it works flawlessly, except for collecting e-mails from Hotmail thru Outlook (which works too, but slow and buggy - G-Mail is no problem at all).

Best regards.....

OpenOffice is Free and is very little difference to MS Office which must be paid for..

OpenOffice opens all MS files.

MSQ Server & files no not open/work in Vista, only any Company using the new version of MSQ Server
