African pair held for cheating British man

BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested two African men in a counterfeiting gang for cheating a British man out of $130,000.

Bessibe Armstrong, 25, from Cameroon, and Stephen Bandu, 32, from Ghana, were arrested at the Sukhumvit Crown hotel in Klong Toey late on Tuesday night.

The two allegedly lured Jahanzeeb Khan, 32, a British businessman, to give them money to buy chemicals and equipment to ``wash'' specially printed US dollar bank notes covered in black ink.

They told Mr Khan the money had been originally intended to be sent to the Ivory Coast. However, they were actually not dollar notes at all but just blank pieces of paper soaked in black ink.

Mr Khan said he gave the two men the cash and had an appointment to pick up the washed bank notes at the Grand President hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11. He went there but the two men did not have the money as promised.

When police arrived at their room to arrest the two, they found two other men from Cameroon, Emmanuel Akwe, 34, and Landry Astrong Alain, 26. The two were also arrested and charged with illegal entry as there were no entry stamps in their passports.

This almost defies belief. Why would a successful businessman trust two men from Ghana? The phrase 'a fool and their money is soon parted' comes to mind.

...and they were staying at the Sukhumvit Crown no less! Not exactly a five-star business hotel, eh?

It happen everyday in internet, that you are lottery winner when you even didn't buy any online lottery at all scam. Some person want to tranfer milllions of dollar into you in a plane crash victim insurance etc.

Its amazing how people get taken in by this get rich quick scams, this scams would not exist if greed and willing victims were in short supply.

If they can choose to become doctors, teachers or lawyers but did not. then yes.

But I don't suppose they had much opportunities in life, do they ?

It still surprises me that anyone would listen to men from Ghana and fall for these scams. But, it only proves P.T. Barnum's famous quote, "There is a sucker born every minute". As long as we have greed and stupidity, people will continue to be conned out of their money.

Its a pity that they dont arrest all the dozens of Thai pairs who have been ripping off tourists in fake gems over the last 20 years .

Dr PP, I've received my fair share of 419 emails from Nigerians. But most Nigerians I know are people like you & me, just getting on with life legitimately.

But I don't suppose they had much opportunities in life, do they ?

Africa is full of opportunity , this boys just chose the easy way out & they just paid for it.
