My GF and I plan to apply for a UK Fiance Visa in May. I used to live and work in Thailand until the end of 2006. We have know each other since 2003 and have been together since 2005. We have travelled a few times together (including Italy to visit my father) and I have visited twice in the last year. We didn't live together in Thailand but still have tickets/photos etc. from our travels. We have written to each other on a weekly basis since my return to the UK in Jan '06. Unfortunately both of us had pay-as-you-go mobiles up until the last couple of months. i.e. we have phone records only for the last couple of months. Will this be a problem bearing in mind we have other evidence going back some time? Also, my income is around £16000 a year; is this considered enough? She speaks fluent English so wil this work in our favour?

The main purpose of these question is do we need to spend a few months building up more evidence or have we got enough?

Thanks.

Have you both kept the envelopes the letters were in? This would show a history of the relationship. Any e-mails that can be printed off? I presume you have plenty of photos from your meetings together, which will help too. You say you have old flight tickets/e-tickets, hotel booking printouts etc. these are ideal. Supply the itemised bills and explain that you had payg mobiles before.

You'll need to show evidence that you have somewhere for her to live once she comes over and that you can financially support her. This doesn't have a set annual income. You will have to give an estimate (and some evidence) of your disposable income after you have paid for your rent and utility bills. They will then decide if this is 'enough'. Best to supply them with payslips and at least 3 months worth (ideally 6 months) of bank statements to show that you are able to cope on your income and you're not constantly living beyond your means as a single person.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. We don't actually have that many emails as we speak on the phone every day. However, all our letters are in their envelopes and I gave her back all the ones she sent to me last time I visited. At the moment I live with my 60 year old mother (2 bedroom house) where we will live initially. I give her £200 or £300 a month to cover bills etc. Presumably I'll need a letter from her? Anyway, as my living costs are quite low, I have £600+ a month leftover.

You should be ok for money then. You'll need a letter from your mum and probably best to get proof that she owns, or has a rental contract for the property. Any emails will do, you don't need a whole stack, but a few taken over the period will prove how long it's been going. The more info you can give them the more likely your application will be successful.

Thanks again for the help. I've just had a look at hotmail and I have emails going back to late '03! We do have a lot of evidence. Are there any other potential pitfalls we should be aware of?
