Phuket loses Bt20 million in flooding

PHUKET: -- Damage from recent flooding on the southern resort island of Phuket will cost the island at least Bt20 million, the province’s deputy governor revealed today.

Mr. Phongphao Ketthong, speaking today after assessing several areas on the island which have been affect ed by severe flooding, said that the island was now returning to normal after the rains.

However, a number of the island’s roads remain impassable to traffic, while several houses, a few of them directly in the path of the flooding, have received severe damage. The Kamala-Patong Road has been particularly badly affected, with mudslides which have buried three cars and the collapse of 10 electricity pylons.

Mr. Phongphao said that local officials were now rushing to clear roads, but conceded that damage could run to Bt20 million, not only from damage to houses and roads but also from loss of business.
