Extension of Visa to Thai Who Gave Kidney to Sister in Denmark

By Bjarne Wildau

Wichin Singsorn, 29, a Thai citizen who went to Denmark to give his ill sister one of his kidneys have been trough almost all the feelings in the world since he’s arrival in the ”strange” cold country where his sister has been living for several years.

First he underwent an operation so the Danish doctors could remove a kidney, and hand it over to his sister. The two operations went well. Unfortunately, the whole situation turned frustrating, when ”Udlændingeservice”, Danish Immigration authorities, insisted that the goodhearted Thai had to leave Denmark, when his tourist visa expired.

Danish doctors advice was on the contrary, that it would be much better if Wichin Singsorn could stay in Denmark two months longer, so he could get the needed examinations, before he left Scandinavia to go back to his village which is 700 km. from the nearest kidney transplant specialized hospital.

The case became a big story, touching the “winter hearts” of the Danish population, when TV2 put on air the story about the difficulties of the Thai man.

"We have removed at kidney from a healthy person, and therefore, we would like to examine the patient during a period of minimum three months, before he travels back to his home country Thailand," said consultant Johan V. Poulsen at the university hospital Skejby Sygehus in Denmark’s second biggest city Aarhus, to the Danish television.

Initially “Udlændingeservice” upheld their demand, but given the public attention to the case, the immigration authorities re-considered hi case and granted him an extended stay until 13 June this year in order for the Danish doctors to give the goodhearted brother all the examinations he truly deserves.

The hospitality of the Scandinavian countries towards everyone who doesn't have a top education and can fill an empty position where natives cannot (or more common: cant be bothered), are downright embarrassing for someone who owns a passport from one of the countries. My country, Norway, is described as one of the worst ones. The Thai Visa-rules are a walk in the park considering what people who doesn't fulfill the crazy-high expectations face in the cold north. They actually sent 3 children who had been in Norway for years (the oldest could was the only one with memories of Pakistan) and could no longer speak their native language, back to Pakistan to live with their mentally ill mother.

So whats the problem here ??

He goes there on a tourist visa.. He voluntarily gives a kidney to another Thai... Then his visa runs out.. immigration follow the rules but the country is understanding and lets him stay longer.. And so ???

Imagine a Farang in Thailand on his 30 day.. You think they are going to give free extensions ?? Probably free medical care ?? Would be bye bye farang and thanks for the money.. I have seen a guy in the immigration offices all bandaged up with a letter from the hosdpital saying he couldnt travel until then, no dice overstay !! Then visa run..

I suspect that the problem is that there is not a visa for visiting the family as there is in Thailand which is why he went on a tourist visa.

He gives a kidney to another Thai who is in fact his sister and not a stranger off the street.

His visa expires but the medical authorities of that country gave their medical advice and it seems that it was ignored by the immigration authorities.

Yes they were absolutely correct in the interpretation of the law but totally lacking in common sense.

Would the same thing happen in Thailand? Maybe and maybe not.

It seems the guy you saw in the immigration offices all bandaged up have a letter from the hospital doctor stating that he was unfit to travel. If he did and was turned down he could have asked to meet with a higher ranking officer and he could well have been permitted to stay.

Mostly the immigration rules are the same but it is possible to appeal.

Is it right for one and not another. No but it is life.

He goes there on a tourist visa..

The original text doesn't specify the kind of Visa.

Can you give some proof of your statement that he was there on a "tourist visa"?

He voluntarily gives a kidney to another Thai...

From the original text:

"Wichin Singsorn, 29, a Thai citizen who went to Denmark to give his ill sister one of his kidneys ...."

Singsorn went to Denmark because his sister was ill and probably was not able to travel to Thailand anymore.

Then his visa runs out.. immigration follow the rules but the country is understanding and lets him stay longer.. And so ???

The advice from the doctors was completely against sending Singsorn back to Thailand and the doctors adviced that Singsorn should stay the time of the needed examinations instead of sending him back to a Third World country where the nearest kidney transplant specialized hospital 700 km. away.

Imagine a Farang in Thailand on his 30 day..

doing a Visa run to Burma, buying 350 Viagra tablets and the whining that he was caught and kicked out of the country ....

I forgot.

This fahrang was living here already for some years, knew Thai rules fairly well and mastered the Thai language.

You think they are going to give free extensions ??

I get every year a FREE extension of my visa without any problems.

Not like in Scandinavia.

Probably free medical care ?? Would be bye bye farang and thanks for the money.. I have seen a guy in the immigration offices all bandaged up with a letter from the hosdpital saying he couldnt travel until then, no dice overstay !! Then visa run..

Then visa run to Burma and buy 350 Viagra tablets for selling it to friends .....

Take a deep breath and jay yen yen ............

I dont know perhaps the line "insisted that the goodhearted Thai had to leave Denmark, when his tourist visa expired. " might have given it away ???

Perhaps you could elaborate in which visa it is that is enshrined for family then ?? My brother would use it to visit me as I am on a long stay..

And please not just some marginal consul operating outside the technical rules please..

Lacking in compassion maybe, but the actual rules, he got a visa for x amount of time and went and voluntarily made himself unfit for travel..

However Europe being a little less draconian didnt boot him out and actually arranged it all so he could stay..

I strongly suspect they paid for all hes medical too.. Maybe there was a benefit or two he could claim ??

The guy had suffered a head injury and been concussed.

When he tried to push the matter (calmly politely no raised voices) the offer went int a spitting rage shouting "I am the boss.. You want monkey house" etc simply as he was questioned (ranong border).. The guy just paid his 10 - 20k or whatever his time spent in hospital overstay was..
