Hi,

I just saw a new topic whose title is "Farang Eating Places In Pratumthani ?".

I am not a native English speaker and I am not sure of its exact meaning :o

Is a "Farang Eating Place" :

- a place where many farangs use to eat ? (or "reserved" to farangs)

- a place where you eat farang food ?

- a place managed/owned by a farang ?

- a place where you eat farangs ? :D

How would you write the title for each of these 4 case ?

Now you have confused me. Just seeing the title I would go there to eat--now, I don't know if I would or not!

Maybe it's a fish and chips shop, and they misspelled 'plaice'. :D

Yes it means a place where you eat farangs.

Conversely there are also many places where you can eat Thais.

Especially in Pattaya... :o

Okay, seriously....

I do not think the term has a generally accepted meaning. It can be said different ways, as you listed them. Of course, it does not mean you eat people. In the usual contexts on ThaiVisa, it probably refers to places that serve farang food. Thais can go there (Sizzler, for example), and the menu may include some Thai food. The ownership or management can be Thai, but there usually will be farang influence on the menu or management.

That is my guess. However, the opening post indicates that the poster is looking for farang-run restaurants.

Key point is that it is poor quality English. Firstly "farang" is not an English word, so it is mixing up two languages and their usage. Hence the ambiguity. "Eating place" wouldn't really be used by many native English speakers in the UK, between one English person and another.

English also doesn't feel the need to dfferentiate between English and non-English so much as the Thais do. They tend to use the word people or omit entirely, whereas Thais distinuguish much more.

My guess is it was written by a Thai. That explains your confusion :o .

English would say something like:

German restaurant. French cafe. Mediterranean food. Authentic Thai cuisine. Real Italian restaurant with native chef.

Thanks PeaceBlondie and AFKAFSinLOS,

It's a very very long time since I learned English at school

and the local "thaiglish" is not the best way to improve it... :o

AFKAFSinLOS's solution seem a good one for me :

Adding a word (food, cuisine, chef, restaurant, ..) to precise the title and remove any ambiguity.

Must be Godzilla got loose again, since he is eating "places", but then again Godzilla is Japaneese, I think. Should be changed to read "The Farang IS eating places". Maybe, he will eat Bangkok?

Not only Godzilla, but there was the movie, "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," and Norman Greenbaum warned about "The Eggplant that ate Chicago, and you'd better watch out, because it's coming to your town." :o

Perhaps it should read as "Falang 'eating places' in Pratumthani"

An 'eating place' is an English expression used for somewhere you can eat, ie restaurant, cafe.

Perhaps 'Falang restaurants in Pratumthani' would be more appropriate.
