I've done it in the opposite direction - high speed ferry from Penang>Langkawi>Satun then the coach from Satun to Phuket. Left Penang about 08:30 and arrived in Phuket abot 04:00, I'd initially intended to stay in Satun overnight - even checked into the Wangmai hotel, but then I changed my mind and took the coach (about 20:00) to Phuket.

I think you're looking at about 12 hours if you do it overland via Hat Yai.
