Since last week I have an intermittent problem with my computer and it is driving me up the wall.

After a couple of hours of use it starts to present everything I type backwards, i.e sdrawkcab, and flash the menus in the programs when i click on them.

If I click on "File" it will open "file" and after that "Edit", "View" and so on, like a running light.

When i reboot it goes away.

I am running XP professional SP2, with NOD32 antivirus, AdAware and Spybot S&D.

Have run NOD and the spyware programs and it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.

Have even tried Antivir run from a thumbdrive with the same result.

Anyone have any idea as to what's up?

Thanks

Desktop or notebook?

If notebook you may have problems with the touch pad being dirty, or brushing against it whilst you work. Same could be true of the mouse for the desktop. Have you cleaned the keyboard recently? Menus in Windows may be activated by the [ALT] +[key] combination, so for example if {ALT}+{f}+{w} fired off in Firefox then it would close the tab you are working on.

A_Traveller is right if you use an Laptop.

If so try to disable the Touchpad in Bios and use an Mouse instead.

If Same is happens again, Download CureIT from http://www.freedrweb.com and run a full scan. It need some time but if you have some "animals" on your Laptop, it will find them. Try to cure and if that isn't possible delete.

Cheers.

.....as well as above - consider looking at keyboard and mouse - if using USB devices; reseat or use different USB ports. My guess is screwed USB keyboard.

Thanks for your replies guys,

I'm on a desktop with a wired keyboard and a Logitech G7 mouse.

Have tried reseating the mouse and keyboard, same thing.

Even switched to a different keyboard and updated the drivers on both keyboard and mouse, no luck.

Downloading CureIt now, will run it over night.

It actually acts like the left arrow key would be stuck, it isn't though. and since it is intermittent it is pretty hard to figure out what is happening.

The running menus are in ALL programs though, not just in FF.

I have googled the problem and can't find a solution. there are other people with the same problem, but no one has a solution and in some cases it seems to "cure itself"..........

Any other ideas?

Used FF as an example, the effect would be similar on any windows program. So many are used to 'mousing around' we often forget that that functions are available via key combinations.

Still think a cleaning session might be of value.

@ Reimar, have run CureIt and it didn't show anything.

@ Traveller, I have switched keyboards just to be sure, but it is still acting up.

Further, if clicking in the menu causes the menus to be "running lights" i.e opening one menu after the other and running upa nd down inside the menus, it shouldn't be keyboard dependent, hmmm

it takes about two hours or so of computer use for the problem to show and it goes away with a reboot. It isn't anything really serious, but it is driving me crazy.

Ideas?

If the problem is not the keyboard itself, it could be the keyboard driver that is causing the problem.

Search the net and install or re-install the latest driver and report back here.

...another thought.

Next time your typing comes out backwards, click on your delete button and attempt to delete the next character after the curser.

You may then get an error message that will lead you to the problem.

It could be java related.

I just did a Google search for your problem. It seems many others are experiencing the same thing, particularly those using Firefox.

Their solution: EDIT... one other thing I did find has to do with extensions causing similar problems. Run FF in safe mode by right clicking the Firefox icon, select properties, insert "-safe-mode" (no quotes) after firefox.exe in the target line and then launch Firefox... if everything is okay there then it is likely an extension or add-on causing the problem.

another solution: -Open FireFox in safe mode

-Click on the 4th option, something like "Restore pref. to default"

...as you are experiencing this problem after using your computer for some time, the above may not be the solution you are looking for, but worth a try anyway.

:D This starts after a couple of hours operation? In general I think that problems that start to show themselves after a couple of hours operation, but not at turn on often are heat realated problems. Try using an external fan blowing on the computer to see if it solves the problem. If it takes longer for the problem to start with the fan than without a fan, then it is heat related. You might need a cooling fan.

Just off the wall...in the first computer I ever owned (a good 30 years ago) I had a problem with displayed text flashing on the screen. Everything else worked, but the text just kept flashing. Turned out to be in the video card, the video card was not exactly sitting correctly in the card cage. If you know where and which the video card is...remove it from the card cage and put it back in. Make sure it is in the connector correctly. The problem I had was that the top of the video card connector was plugged in all the way, but the bottom of the connector was partially unplugged. (That is to say the card wasn't perfectly 90 degrees from the connector, the bottom was farther out than the top). Once I got it plugged in properly, the text flashing problem stopped. That was a weird one.

Everest doesn't show anything strange. CPU is running at 43 degrees

I have an E 8400 with an Arctic Cooling CPU cooler on it.

MB ASUS P5K

Is it at all possible that it is a problem emanating from a website opened in FF?

I seem to remember that I have been asked if I wanted to debug because of a runtime error.

The debug showed that something was fishy with IP-mart.com.

Have been running FF 3 beta 4 for a couple of weeks and now that I think about it, didn't have a problem when i was on FF 2.

Is not the temperature of the CPU alone, the temp of the graphic card could make problems as well, or the temp of the chipset! Let Everest running in background and you'll have the temp icons in the lower right of the screen.

But as Jockstar suggested, use an different browser as well. May you download the latest Opera Beta, which is very fast!

Cheers.

The highest temp measured in the whole system is 51 degrees.

That is the VGA card, MSI 9600 OC.

Still wondering a bit about what I posted above

I have gone back to FF 2 for a spell now. Sofar so good, but haven't been running for any longer time period yet.

Could it be some Java script on there?

Maybe?! But difficult to say. I had IE7 completly disabled in my computer and problems I had before was gone after that. Never a Problem with any version of FF sofar. With Opera I've a small problem in Vista Ultimate but not in XP!

Have you try to uninstall FF completly include a registry Tweak to get out all of FF and install after that again? After some experiences, I mainly run Regedit all times after uninstalling a program to get out as much traces as possible. Since than less problems too. But here you need to know how to do that!

Cheers.

Runtime errors shouldn't cause your computer to type backwards.

They are mainly confined to a conflict with TSR or other running program, software issues, computer virus, memory issue etc..

Have a look at all the programs that load onto your system at start up and disable those that you don't need to have open each time you use your computer. The runtime error may be associated with one of these programs.

Have you thought about doing a system restore to a date prior to when these problems becoming apparent?

Guys, there hasn't been any backwards typing since switching back to FF2.

Don't know if it will last, but keeping my fingers crossed
