Hi there

I am currently a long term (responsible) user of Stilnox for severe insomnia and I am going to be in Thailand for up to six months. Doctors here are reluctant to prescribe six months of this type of medication here and in a perfect world i'd love to say after a blissful beach holiday I may not need it anymore but the associated anxiety that I have surrounding being deprived of my Stilnox 'safety blanket' is causing insomnia in and of itself.

My questions are: is Stilnox / Ambien / Zolpidem available in BKK, and where should I go to get it? Are doctors happy to prescribe it when you explain your situation? Any idea of how much it costs?

Also, I plan to travel to Laos and Cambodia and assume I will stock up in Thailand and carry it on my person. Is this legal and OK to do?

Thanks so much in advance for your valuable help and advice guys :o

Hi I am unsure what to suggest, but it may be prudent for you to obtain a letter from your GP, outlining your diagnosis along with your current treatments. My experience of trying to purchase Zopiclone in the past leads me to suspect that purchasing Zolpidem over the counter may be just as difficult. It is interesting as it is relatively easy to purchase some Anti-psychotics and Anti-depressants over the counter. My understanding is that you will require a prescription from a Thai hospital to actually obtain these. Therefore a letter from your GP, may aleviate some of the hassles in getting them from a doctor here, who quite rightly may suspect that you are an abuser of this medication on first presentation.

I can fully understand that as a long term user that you have a degree of anxiety about withdrawing the safety blanket of these meds. I'm pretty certain that your GP, providng he is satisfied that there is no risk in prescribing these to you, will give you a months supply. This may be the ideal time to try to look at reducing your dependence on said medications, however an initial months supply may be adequate for you if it is a succesful holiday.

As regards carrying medication over borders be aware that you should certainly have prescriptions for this, as you could end up in a spot of bother.

Good luck and have a great holiday.

You will not get a 6 month's supply at one go anywhere. These are all scheduled drugs and subject to particular restrictions. It would be essential that you have a letter from your GP to present to customs when you have a substantial amount of these drugs on you. In this region, you risk serious consequences.

You wont get 6 months worth! You dont need 6 months worth!

What you need to do is reduce your dependance on zolpidem. Do this by exercising intensely during the day, avoid darkness etc and stay in the light, take ZMA supplements or even melatonin(if need be) and you will sleep without it. Worst case take a valium for the anxiety but with all the exercise and work etc youll be dead tired YOU WILL SLEEP and sleep well.

You can get zolpidem etc easily in BKK and not only from doctors but its time you went off your dependance on it.

Thanks everyone... Sampam what is ZMA? Also I like what i've heard about Melatonin but i'm an aussie and i'm not sure it's available here yet. I have done the rounds with Valium and Serapax and temazapam and want to stay well away from those because I found them so addictive and I had to keep increasing the dosages. Even though i've been taking stilnox for 3 years I still take the same dose I originally took.

I am currently coming off my Luvox as I don't believe it's really necessary anymore. My ultimate goal is of course to be drug free and to this end I do a fair bit of exercise every day and an hour of yoga, please don't think I have just lazily accepted my situation!

Thanks for the advice; I will take a letter from my doctor here explaining my current medication, that sounds like a good idea.

ZMA is a blend of zinc magnesium and vitamin B6. In addition to helping you sleep better it will increase your testosterone levels naturally.

I really cant judge how much and how intensely you exercise nor your diet etc without knowing more. But I can tell you coming from a similar position once I hit the gym intense workouts for 1.5hours+ and held out on food etc not over eating but infact under eating and a warm nice shower/bath after dinner I would sleep soundly. So it really depends on how intense you workout and what you do during the rest of the day.

You could buy melatonin via a simple search online.
