New Job = New Work Visa. A Little Visa Insight Please...

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm a 27 year old Canadian teacher living in Bangkok. I've been at my current school for almost 2 years but I've decided to take another job offer. My contract end date in June 13th, 2008, and my new contract start date is August 11th, 2008.

I would like know what the best way is to remain in the country legally, having the ability to leave the country freely to travel to other places during my 2 months of professional inactivity( :D ), and reduce my visa travel costs by traveling to Singapore just one time.

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I don't mind if you spell it out for me. Seriously. :o

You forgot the most important item - are you here on a 90 day visa entry or a one year extension of stay? If visa entry you can stay until the permitted to stay date - if extension it ends at end of employment.

You are not going to be able to stay two months in Thailand but if you travel you can use visa exempt entry to cover that time (30 day permitted to stay on each entry). You should plan to exit on the 13th and plan from there. After you obtain the new work permit/paperwork receipt you can make the Singapore visit for visa (about August 16 or so).

Will your new employer let you apply for your new non-imm B immediately after you finish your old job? If not go get a 60 day tourist visa from a neighbouring country.

Thanks!

It's presently a visa extension as it will run out at the end of my employment.

My plan is to kick around in BKK for 7 days after my contract end day and then go 'somewhere' and then come back with a 30 day tourist visa, and then head out again 'somewhere', come back with another 30 day visa (in August) and then go to Singapore with my documents and such to get my work permit papers for work and be perfectly legal once again.

How's that sound?

Go on the same day .You'll be charged an overstay fine for those 7 days now, to the best of my knowledge.

Bad if recent reports are true and you have no real reason to stay in Bangkok - no 7 day period now unless you obtain an extension of stay - so that is 1,900 baht down the tube - if you immediately leave you could avoid that. Those are 30 day visa exempt stamps you plant to get - they are not visas. You can use up to 90 days on them.
