My visa and work permit expired today and i have decided to quit and do a bit of travelling. Had an interesting day today. Was under the impression i had to turn in my wp at the dept of labour before going to immo to get a 7 day extension. So i turned up at labour where i was told that under the new regs it is no longer necessary to turn in the wp. OK. Went down to immo where they wouldn't give me an extension as i didn't have a letter from my employers to say i was leaving. So i am holding a wp and a visa and a copy of my contract which all expire today and ask pretty please can you help me. No, cannot. I put on my best pretty please act and asked again. No, cannot. either go back to school and get the letter or go out tomorrow to cambodia and pay the overstay and get a 30 day exemption or got to laos pay the overstay and get a tourist visa. I was planning to go out to laos on sunday so nipped back to school and got the letter, back to immo and got 7 days but had to pay 1900 baht. So i can confirm the free 7 day grace period is gone and don't forget to get a letter from your employer, it has to be on school headed paper written in thai and signed off by the director of your school as per your docs for extensions. Got what i needed but it has taken me 7 hours for what could have been a 30 minute job if i had turned up at immo with the letter at 8.30. Hope this saves somebody anfrusratinfg day in the future.
