Reading & Writing In Chiang Mai

Just a heads up about three different things going on in Chiang Mai that may be of interest to all of you well-traveled life observers. If you think you've got a story in you that you have to get out, and don't know how, there are groups here where you can learn. All three add up to slices of culture and something else to do with your time besides the same old thing.

The Chiang Mai Writer's Group meets every Thurs at Paparazzi on Nimmanhaemin (very close to Powerhouse Gym) at 7 pm. It gives us a forum to read bits of our completed works, or works in progress and then get critical feedback from other writers in the group. It's full of talented people with incredible skills to weave a tale. In the mix there are screen writers, travel writers, fiction, and science fiction writers, and playwrights - some hobbyists and some published professionals. Just an incredibly exciting group. Many came as curious wannabe writers and are now quite able raconteurs. Some took until about 80 years old to get started, and now they rock. It's never too late!

One talented young man from the group, mainly a screenwriter and science fiction writer, with years of experience and study under his belt, conducts more intense workshops for those who are serious about honing their craft more seriously. His sessions are alot more technical and involve writing assignments. It's a great place to learn about the nuts n bolts of story writing and clarifying your ideas. Check out his announcement for a better explanation of what it is and isn't.

And for those who love an audience and/or want to hone their public speaking and reading skills, there's Santia's Grotto on Thapae Soi 2 every Tues night at 8pm. You can come by and tell some jokes, or regale us with your finished story or poetry. It's a real Open Mike night right here in Chiang Mai. We've been calling it 'Do It! Night'. Some nights there's a big crowd and lots of energy making for a festive atmosphere. Other nights smaller crowds make for intimate readings and some time for discussion or riffing off of ideas from other peoples performances. It's low-key, fun and entirely driven by the participants. So if you wanna come by and entertain or be entertained, you know Santia's is the place to Do It!
