Trying to a Samsung 1 TB internal HDD for sale in BKK. Couldn't find it in P'tip a few weeks ago. Would appreciate price paid if anyone has purchased here. Thanks.

Samsung have a history of not making available their current highest capacity drives for Thailand. When 250GB was the largest size all you could find for a long time was the 80GB size, now that it's 1TB, 500GB is the largest size they market locally unless you can find someone bringing in the 1TB size from Singapore privately. If you want 1TB then you're most likely going to have to settle for one made in Thailand e.g. Western Digital, Seagate or Hitachi, not an import. Maybe Samsung have given up on the hard disk market in Thailand as WD and Seagate have the lions share of the Thai market. Most shops don't even sell Samsung drives anymore. I was reading customer reviews about the 1TB Samsungs the other day and a lot of people are experiencing problems with them but hard to say if the problems are with the disk or in the way people are using them. Without local support then I'd be wary of the 1TB size until there is, otherwise I'd get one myself next time I'm in Singapore or Hong Kong.

Hi :o

I DID see those in Panthip! Only SATA tough. The price was around 10.000 Baht, a couple of shops on 4th floor had them available (last weekend).

Best regards.....

At 10,000 baht they'll probably still have 'em available for many more weekends :o

Looks like I'll be bringing one in from abroad.

Thanks anyways.

It is normal for high end stuff to cost double the US price--if you can even find it. So there should be no surprises here at all.

As far as brands, avoid the 1TB Western Digital drive because it is too slow, usually runs at 5400 RPM, and performs very poorly in all benchmarks. It was designed for server farms to save energy rather than for home use so spend a few more dollars for any other 1TB drive if you care about a substantial performance increase.

I always avoid Western Digital disks,

having had two fail in a row.

Both were replaced under warranty, but I now have no faith in the brand name.

Oops..........

I just got a 500 GB Western Digital several months ago as my main data HDD........ it's an IDE. Little later i got a second 500 GB Western Digital, this time a SATA, to be a backup of the main data one...... and now, i have a third Western Digital in my machine to be the system HDD.

Umm, reason? SEVERAL people in Panthip (of all places!) told me they are the best available quality these days.............

I personally prefer(ed) Maxtor, but that company doesn't seem to exist anymore (gobbled up by Seagate)... and the only HDD's that ever died on me were - SEAGATE (2 of them, and another 2 in office machines).

Till now i have to say i am perfectly happy with the WD's. If i may ask, how old were yours when they failed? Mine all came with a three-year warranty.

dam_n, which brand to trust in..............................................

Best regards.....
