8 Year Old girl killed over a 500 Baht mobile phone.

A dramatic update now relating to the story we featured a few days ago regarding the apparent drowning of an eight year old girl in a lake located on the Eastern Side of Pattaya. We can now reveal that this case now appears to be a murder over a 500 Baht mobile phone. The case took place on Tuesday Afternoon and by Friday Morning the suspected murderer, a neighbour of the girl’s parents was in custody. Following the arrest, Banglamung Police organized a reconstruction which revealed the chain-of-events leading up to the girl’s murder while the victim’s parents remained at a local temple praying over the body of their daughter. The case began on Sunday when the suspect, Khun Maligar aged 26 saw the young girl playing with her mobile phone in the street. Khun Maligar shouted over to the girl and suggested the pair go for a bike ride. The young girl accepted the invitation and the pair rode off in the direction of the Sukumvit Road. The suspect, by her own admission, told the girl that her bike had run out of gas and the girl would have to sell her mobile phone as Khun Maligar had no money. The pair made their way to the tuk.com center located on the South Pattaya Road and the phone was sold for 500 Baht. Khun Maligar told Police that she was afraid that the girl would tell her mother about the phone and it was at this point she decided to kill her. The money was in fact going to be used to buy gas and Yabba tablets according to the suspect. Khun Maligar asked the girl if she wanted to go swimming in a nearby lake and the pair then made their way to the lake. The girl entered the lake and as she attempted to swim back to the shoreline, she was pushed back into the water by Khun Maligar who used a wooden stick. The girl eventually went under the water and drowned as Khun Maligar looked on.

There was an attempt to take the woman to the parents at the temple to give her a chance to ask for forgiveness, however emotions were running high at the Temple and a large crowd had gathered. Police decided it would be safer for the woman to confront the parents at the Police Station where she explained the chain-of-events to them and then asked for their forgiveness. The parents looked stunned as they listened to the account of the last moments of their daughter life but dramatically forgave the woman for her actions.

Khun Maligar is now facing many years behind bars if she convicted of first degree murder in court.

I too am stunned that anyone could be so evil, cold and calculating and then go and ask for forgiveness from the parents.

However, I believe this is something to do with the Buddist faith and the act of giving this forgiveness raises the parents to a higher status in their next life, not, that they think their daughter is better off dead. I am sure they will be mourning the loss of their daughter for a long time to come just like you or I would.

Hopefully, this excuse for a human being will now get her just deserts in prison where she belongs. I don't think that I would be able to do any forgiving though if it were my child. These parents are better than me for sure.

Rest in peace little girl.

She deserves the death penalty, a prison sentence is too good for her

That would be too easy for her. Put her in prison and let her rot for the next 50 years.

What a horrible story this is, unbelievable.

An absolutely dispicable crime.

Tell her the punishment........

Force her to go cold turkey, then

Torture her, then

Then tell her she will die by drowning, then

Fill up tank slowly as she eventually drowns.

I can't even comprehend this. How can she be so cruel? This goes beyond any excuse, even mental illness or insanity.

I guess the answer is in this sentence :

The money was in fact going to be used to buy gas and Yabba tablets according to the suspect

I'm still hoping that a normal human being couldn't do something like this without the "help" of some drug substance effects in his/her brain...

This sad drama could be a profound case study on cultural differences between Thais and farangs.

Being from a predominantly Christian western nation, I can say that our culture is heavily influenced by, for instance, the lack of belief in (knowledge of?) reincarnation. We are taught to believe, and therefore act as if, this is the only time we will be alive in a physical body, so not only to make the most of it, but to extend it at all costs.

Thais, being predominantly Buddhist, have a much different perspective and it is reflected in many ways. e.g. The parents "know" that their precious daughter, having suffered such a violent death, will undoubtedly be re-born into a better environment, with a higher status.

The parents themselves, having to deal with the trauma of loss of a child, also gain "merit" (karma) and can endure the pain perhaps just a little easier than in the Christian west. ("Is she going to heaven or hel_l? Did she have time to repent for her sins?")

Nobody, Thai or western, would say the murder of this child is at all *justified,* but the cultural/religious background is so different that the typical Western person's reaction can be so different than the typical Thai person's.

I'm by no means an expert at sociology or anthropology, but have bumped against a few scenarios like this, such as upcountry Thai parents taking their HIV+ son from a situation in Pattaya where he was successfully following a regimen of antivirals, but died slowly and painfully at home without the meds ("He should spend his final moments at home with family." "His suffering only guarantees him a better life next time."), and after taking the time to ask questions about the cultural and religious underpinnings, changed my knee-jerk reaction of "What dirty rotten, uncaring bastards those parents are!" and realize that I probably will never totally understand the differences. I'm learning to simply accept the difference, and hope I am becoming less judgmental. "Mai pen rai," has become more than just a saying.

Whether Thai or farang, I think everybody would say the girl's murder was wrong, but after that the reaction to the event is different in many ways.

My condolences to the family and friends of the little girl. May peace be with you, and with her.

I echo many comments listed above so do not need to repeat them.

What I will add and ask of others is; what was the reaction of your Thai partners when you discussed this incident?

Here we watched the police video on the PCN - I was stunned at the train of events and the person that comitted the crime. I was futher stunned when she was presented to the parents asking forgiveness.

I talked to my OH about this and got a fairly neutral reaction - '....people on drugs do crazy things....'
