Well its taken me a few months here to finally understand some of the acronyms used here, so I thought that we could make a dictionary here for the uninitiated to the forum. Unique ThaiVisa language, perhaps even get it pinned eg..

BiB = Boys in Brown = Thai Police

TV = Thai Visa

LOS = Land Of Smiles = Thailand

Im sure you all have more to add to the dictionary!!

Great thread. I've always felt stupid when reading some post, now I'll have my answers .

This morning I already learned what is an "expat", but still don't undertsand why some people spell it "ex-pat"?

Two words I would like to have explained : "OP" and "troll"

Tks

Posted

ex-pat / expat = Expatriot = person who is not living in the country they were born/raised

OP = Orginal Post = The person who started the topic (post)

TGF = Thai Girlfriend

troll = Antagonistic person, posting controversy regardless of their experience to the forum to gain responses

Well, not exactly an acronym, but the OP did mention this as the TV "Dictionary" thread...so what i would like to know is what is a "punter"? As I am not a POM (prisoner of her majesty) I do not quite know what the term means, and it's been used quite a bit from our British/Ozzie friends.

Visa Exempt Entry = Entry made without a visa, limited to 90 days in 6 months for most western countries.

Visa on Arrival = Visa that is applied for at the border just prior to entering Thailand. Most western countries are not allowed to get them.

Visa = A sticker placed in your passport by a consulate that allows you to enter Thailand with different requirements/rights/length compared to a Visa Exempt Entry.

Permission to Stay= When you enter Thailand, you use a visa or visa exempt entry to enter, you are then given permission to stay until a certain date.

Extension of Stay = This is an extension of your permission to stay, not your visa. Received from immigration inside Thailand.

Re-entry Permit = If you want to leave Thailand and return to finish up a previous permission to stay, then you need to get a re-entry permit prior to leaving Thailand.

Visa Expiration Date = The "enter before" date on your visa. You must make all entries at least one day prior to this date.

Visa Run = Leaving the country and going to a Thai consulate in another country to apply for another visa. Usually done to a consulate in the local region.

Border Run = Leaving the country, entering a neighboring country, and immediately returning to Thailand to either activate a new entry using a visa, or a new visa exempt entry.

Not an acronym, but I've seen the word 'shill' a few times.Does it mean someone who's surreptitiously acting in the (financial) interests of a party whilst pretending to be a customer or a neutral figure, ie someone who recommends a hotel etc whilst he is in fact the owner?
