Hi there I hope you can help. I am writing on behalf of my friend. He has a Thai Girlfriend and would like her to come to the UK. He is wondering the best way to go about it.

I have been trying to help him with this process as he's not that confident with the internet.

He met his GF in Jan this year and stayed with her for 10 days. He has been in constant communication since then, by email and SMS and phone calls. He has since visited for another 10 days and got back last week. Whilst on this visit they underwent a Thai wedding ceremony - which was photographed - but didn't register with any authorities.

My friend would like his GF to be able to visit with a view to marriage. I am trying to help him prepare a visa application - but I don't really know whether he should go to an agency for help or if it would be classed as a simple application.

Is it best to apply for a visitor visa - she has two children back in Thailand and an appartment and also family members to return to. He would be prepared to support her whilst here.

Or apply for a fiance visa - he is happy to marry her and wants to bring the children over as and when that is appropriate.

Whilst on his last visit he tried to put the wheels in motion - but can no longer get in touch with the company he started the process with - luckily he didn't hand over any money - even though they tried to get it from him.

I have found out about TB testing and we have told his GF about where to go - is there anyone she should ask for in particular.

Her English is not great - will this make any difference in the eyes of the Visa people.

PLEASE help! I have never done a visa application - so I don't know if I'm out of my depth. He is a very good friend and I want to see him happy. What is the best way to proceed. Do we need to get some outside help?

Are they likely to grant a fiance visa for such a short relationship?

Thanks in anticipation!

I take it that you will be helping him through the process of filling in the forms too, as between the two of you there would be no reason to use an agency, it's quite straightforward. Read some of the posts on the forum about visitor and fiance visa applications and decide which one is best to aim for.

For the visitor visa the proof will be that she has the funds (From your friend) to pay for things while she is in the UK and that she will return to Thailand once her visit is over. The fiance visa is different, there is more importance placed on proving they have a real relationship (Letters, meeting proof, phone records etc), that he can support her once she arrives and that they will have a place to live.

The TB certificate is only necessary for the fiance visa and should be done as soon as possible to when the application is submitted as it only lasts for 6 months. It is not necessary for her to speak great English, she can elect to have any interviews done in Thai. It may be a good idea for him to travel with her if she doesn't speak English as the officials at the airport in the UK can be <deleted> to people in the immigration hall. One asian immigration officer started having a go at my Mrs last time, before he realised she was with me. I can imagine they can be real ****s to some of the poor people trying to get through immigration.
