Last evening I attempted upgrading my WRT54G v3 from its current firmware HyperWRT 2.0, (which has worked perfectly for over 18 months) to DD-WRT v24 STD.

After a hard reset, everything appeared normal and I was able to get to the DD-WRT web interface. I went through the DD-WRT setup, referring to my setup notes and screenshots from the previous (HyperWRT) firmware installation.

I was never able to get PPPoE connectivity (nor any other flavor of connection) to TRUE with the DD-WRT firmware. (I am positive that I was using the right username / password and settings. I took copious notes and screenshots of the HyperWRT setup pages.)

After a few hours of attempting various settings in DD-WRT, I gave up, and flashed the router back to HyperWRT. I am at that point now until I can get a resolution to the non-connectivity issue with DD-WRT.

Suggestions?

I just have a question: Why? Is there anything wrong with HyperWRT? Have you used Tomato firmware? What does DD-WRT v24 do that you need?

I'm really not really willing to debate the merits of one router firmware over another Nikster. (You know what they say about opinions.) But since you did ask, DD-WRT provides for Open VPN and dhcp reservations / static leases. Not only does HyperWRT not support these, as far as I know, the firmware itself is not being maintained anymore.

I have not ruled out Tomato if DD-WRT doesn't work for me. However, as you may know, I have an "aversion" to things named for a fruit residing on my network. :o

Can you post a diagnostics print out for us RK?

I'm not sure what I could possibly provide as far as diagnostics Malcom. The router is completely static at the moment. I can ping it and access it via the web GUI but there is no connectivity at all to the internet cloud / True. No outside traffic to speak of.

for DD-WRT I would suggest looking through www.linksysinfo.org forums , DD-WRT subforum , and see what is said.

what do the log files indicate when it tries to connect to the TRUE DSLAM ? do you have it in the "keep alive " mode ?

I use Tomato 1.19 on a WRT54GL and WAN port to the TRUE Huwei modem for my TRUE connection. both on UPS and rock stable I am quite enamoured with the 54GL and Tomato ( run an open VPN server on it if you desire )

I am all over the DD-WRT (broadcom) sub-forum Stu. I thought I would ask in here as the non-connectivity problem seems (to me) to be a "True-centric" issue.

For instance, in the old HyperWRT firmware setup I had PPPoE selected, my username (just the username without "@truehisp," etc.) and password and it just worked. In the DD-WRT setup, I have it set the same yet get no connectivity.

In the DD-WRT setup there are many more config settings that I don't have the "True ISP" settings for. Possibly someone here knows them?

Service Name: ____________________ (This was left blank in the HyperWRT setup.)

PPP Compression: Enable / Disable

DTAG VDSL Vlan Tagging: Enable / Disable

MPPE Encryption: ____________________

STP: Enable / Disable

It is in "keep alive" mode. I have log enabled: HIGH, (with Dropped, Rejected, Accepted selected), and yet nothing is generated in the log file.

Normally you need to ad the extension like @truehisp or @trueadsl and so on to the username. If you have an leased line it's may different but leased line normally using special Data-Lines and Modems.

The other settings you better ask at True Service. Try to call to 02 900 9191 for info9s.

Cheers.

this is my settings from tomato

maybe you need the service name but I cannot see why - I would think it was just an internal nomenclature , but you might want to put TrueHiSpeed in there and see what happens

else flash tomato 1.19 :-)

Yes, I tried both of those earlier today when I found them during a search in one of your previous posts Reimer. No work for me.

Yes, those look very similar to the HyperWRT settings. Elegantly simple! If I can't get DD-WRT to work, I'll probably jus go back to HyperWRT. Trouble is, I don't like to be defeated by the technology and I fear that if I keep flashing this thing I am going to "brick" it.

Got it!!!

How I did it:

I unplugged the True modem (ZyXel Prestige 900) and while it was re-booting I just kept hitting the "connect" button in the DD-WRT's setup page. The router connected when the modem came online.

As far as I know, this is an undocumented fix. I hope it might help someone else someday.

Thanks for everyone who contribured to the thread.

I thought the G was an adsl modem also ? you sure you weren't trying to run 2 modems ?

my true Huwei I have set just as a dumb modem/pure bridge and drive it using the 54GL which does not have an inbuilt modem

I was lucky as the password was out there for my modem with the TRUE firmware so I could access the settings in the modem.

Of course not Stu! (I only look stupid!) :o

The WRT54G is just a router, not a modem. Very similar to the BEFSR41 -- the same router with the added wireless capability.

To Nikster, (and anyone else) who recommended the Tomato router firmware to me on this thread:

After running DD-WRT on my Linksys router for the last two months, I decided to give Tomato version 1.19 a trial. (Tomato v1.20 still has some bugs from what I read on their forum.) I will be the first to admit, Tomato is working better than the DD-WRT firmware ever did and it does everything I require. Simple to set up, yet very adaptable and configurable.

Thank you very much.
