Anyone Know Of A Good Bookstore In Isaan?

Hello, I live in southern isaan and was just curious if there are any bookstores that have a good selection of books (in English). I am an avid reader and have been ordering books online from kinokuniya.com in BKK. Although they have a decent selection, the shipping, handling, and VAT charges can get a little pricey. My neighborhood book store has a little selection of English books sponsored by "Asia Books" but I have read almost everything they have in their inventory and frankly I cannot read those cheesy "Bangkok Hilton" or 'my big big honey" type books. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :o

Here in Udon, we have two places, The Irish Clock and Fuzzy Ken's that offer used book exchange. I usually pass my read books on to friends and they pass their's on to me.

I suggest the next time you are in Bkk., Chiang Mai, Pattaya, etc., you stock up at one of the many used book stores, and then save your read books and trade them in on your next visit.

I feel for you. Having a good supply of books to be read is a comfort to me.

I read e-books, you can get readers for most advanced phones, I have a Nokia N70 with a mobipocket reader. At first it takes a little bit getting used to reading a book on your phone, but after a while you don't want to read a paper book anymore. I always have three or four unread books on my phone at anytime and of course they are always with me. If I'm waiting for my wife, no problem, I read my book. Because the phone is back lighted you can read in any light conditions even in the dark. This helps me a lot since I like to read myself to sleep and my wife doesn't like a light on, now no problem I read my phone. The cost is variable, but generally less than new paperbacks, and there is no tax and no deliverycharge or waiting period, you can download them right away and you can get old classics for nothing or next to nothing. I have read all the Sherlock Holmes books, a great read and I would never have thought of reading them before. Issangeaorg

I live in Korat and have many "good" books. Would be willing to trade, loan or just give a few away. Reading does help pass the time here, doesn't it! :o Will only be here till Monday this trip, but pm me, I'm here off and on all the time.

Try Megabooks (www.megabooksthailand.com). They stock a full range of discounted magazines and books and EMS delivery is fast and free anywhere in Thailand on orders of B2000 or more.

Well, if you're prepared to travel around in Isahn then you might as well bite the bullet and consider ' one night in Bangkok ' . I am also an avid reader and as new books are pretty expensive I get most of mine in secondhand bookshops. Although I don't like the area much Khao Sahn road has undoubtably the best selection of books anywhere in Thailand. ' Shaman ' books has a couple of branches and stock a great selection of books, mostly of the non cheesy variety. Plenty of books on history, local culture...just about anything really. Prices range from 80 baht for a well thumbed paperback upto 500 plus for something bigger in good condition. :D

Thanks to all! I will try megabooks. The e-books on your phone sounds like a good option but how much does a nokia N70 with pocket reader cost?

The N70 has come down in price and is now less than 10,000 baht, the pocket reader does not cost anything. You are not restricted to this phone any phone that is a so called smart phone will work. These are phones that use a symbian, palm, or Microsoft mobile operating system. Some of the phones are becoming pretty reasonable now and the e-book reader is usually free. Issangeorge

I download reading material, not just books and then copy them to my Pocket PC. That way I have short articles of interest and whole books. I know there are special electronic devices designed for reading only which apparently are easier to read in sunlight and less damaging for your eyes. Don't know what they are called though.

Guys, use any torrent site like piratebay or mininova and do a search under books. They have a dam_n good selection of books to download and also a fair selection of audiobooks. Beats having to pay for them.

You can also use Amazon.com. I use them a hel_l of a lot for books, DVDs etc. They come real quick and the postage has always been very reasonable. Only time it was a bit pricey was when ordering a load of hard board books for my littleun. They were quite heavy.
