My husband and I are from the USA. We are in our late 20s and would like to spend 4-6 months in Chiang Mai, simply for the cultural experience. My husband runs an internet-based business that doesn't depend on his location, so he would be working normally while we are there. We also have a baby daughter that would be coming with us.

We'd like to take Thai language lessons while we are there in any case, and I was looking at AUA's website about it. They seemed to think it would be difficult to get an education visa with just a letter from them. Does anyone have experience with this type of situation? Or ideas about the best way for us to get visas? With our baby and all, we'd rather not be doing visa runs, or at least keep them to a minimum.

Thanks.

As nobody has replied to you yet ..

My suggestion is ...

If you want to get Ed Visa ...

Read the Walen advert above - to know what some schools are able to do

Then try to find such a College in Chiang Mai

You might ask for help in finding one by posting in the Chiang Mai section of this Forum.

But maybe some other visa is possible ...

I will leave that to others to say

No need for education visa. Just get a tourist visa in the USA. Ask for a multi-entry or double entry. With extensions, the double-entry can last you 6 months.

Concur, ED visa is good if planning to stay for at least 12 months.

Just in case, to get the ED visa you need a letter from the ministry of education. This letter will get applied for by the school you are going to study, and the requirements for them to start the paperwork is that you pay upfront a whole year's worth of tuition.

The minimum the ministry of education wants you to study is 180 hours/year.

This ED visa will only get you 90 days on entry, but this can get extended within Thailand for 1900 Baht (every 90 days), provided you keep attending classes. At every extension you'll need proof of attendance of the previous 3 months (which the school will prepare for you)!

Six months, double entry Tourist visa!

Get 60 days on arrival, after 60 days extend for 30 days (1900 Baht)

Do a border run (out and straight back in again) to use you second entry, 60 days again followed by 30 days extension.

You could follow this up with up to 3 consecutive border runs giving you 30 days each.

Monty - the OP said she was interested in AUA in Chiang Mai - their website says they are not registered to apply for the Min of Ed letter - they give only an acceptance to study letter to the Student.
