I would find a specialist who does toe surgery, like a podiatrist (not a pedicurist). My ingrown toenail could not be fixed by regular medical doctors, until they sent me to a doctor of podiatry. Hurt like the dickens - he had to cut out the nail at the root, on that edge, and give me a double shot of novocaine. The root now grows weird, but has never ingrown in 40 years.

Some of my other toenails have gotten noticeably thicker over the years, but I suggest you see a specialist in toe surgery.

PB: Was that in Thailand? I came to the conclusion, reinforced by a doctor at Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital, that there are no podiatrists in Thailand. If you know of one in Thailand, please post name and details.

There is a Podiatrist on Sukhumvit 71 (Phra Khanong) between soi 11 & 15. I have no personal experience with him but a neighbor from the US had a severe ingrown toenail and went to him. The treatment was painful but effective. He felt the Dr. was competent and his methods and office hygenic.

He has been mentioned before on this forum.

Cant they do a local anesthetic?

First;y you might want a biopsy.Secondly, of course they use anesthetic. ....but if you have had a nail removed you will subsequently require pain-killers - surely you've heard of people being torutred by haveing their nails removed - or did you just think they deserved it?

As I said above you may well need a large "shock absorber" bandage on your fot for a few days.

Although this may just be coincidental, but about a month ago, I had a dull pain coming from the sole area of the foot which has the toe nail problem. It only lasted about 2 days, and as I said not painful. But i did think it may be inter-related.

Unlikely - you probably have strained you foot by walking on it badly due to the painful nail?

Nobody is saying you have cancer! - What I'm saying is that you should take the opportunity to check whilst getting it treated - a Doctor may just look at it and say it's fine and doesn't need a biopsy.

BTW - Thai doctors are in general crap.

If the diseased toenail does not hurt, simply file it down ... I recommend a metal file that would be suitable for machinery ... not an emory board.

I agree with Farang0tang - this is getting out of hand. The chances of it being malignant are virtually nil!! - and yes, I have diagnosed a nail with a squamous cell carcinoma below it! It's a fungal nail for goodness sake! Yes there are other reasons for nails becoming deformed such as dropping the whisky bottle on it when you're pissed, kicking a brick etc, but the bottom line is the matrix becomes deformed/infected. Partial nail avulsion wher the sides only are removed permanently look awful! - and when I do nail surgery yes I inject a local analgesic - you DON'T inject an anaesthetic into the toes - and I destroy the matrix (see my earlier post). Not to do so would be a BIG mistake - it would only grow back again looking a lot worse. I should know - I've been a UK podiatrist for over 40 years.

There is a service that treats and grinds the affected nail called EURO Foot Well Ltd 022539295 at Plonchit centre on the 2nd floor . They also have Gehwol foot care products from Germany
