My Thai lady and I have been together for 14 years.

On my demise I want to make sure that she can claim any assests I leave within Thailand. Assests outside of Thailand are provided for in a UK will.

I have made a will through a Thai Lawyer a couple of years ago which will no doubt acheive what I stipulate.

However I have had whispers in my ear that the lawyers could claim as much as 40% of the assests for their services.

There is nothing in the written will to say as such but this is Thailand and you never get the true picture.

I have also heard that the local Amphur Office can issue a document which would cover such and event.

I would appreciate any sensible comments on the subject.

Cheers

Honey, if that is what you have heard, believe it! Get in touch with other Thia Lawyers to make a double transalation or whatever. If you want, whatever, to go specifically to someone. Get a double done. Then there is tnot mistake. My husband is a Thai Lawyer and is as poor as shit, and would never cheat you but you must remember that these guys are human. Have a double done with the translation so you know what will happen in such an unfortunate event.

Are you implying that he signed a will that was written in Thai and that he didn't know what he was signing? You should never sign anything if you don't understand it - written in Thai or not.

You don't need a will to leave so called assets in Thailand to anyone on your death.

Bank accounts can be opened jointly with your girlfriend. In the event of your death, she would have no problems accessing the funds. If you apply yearly for a non-immigrant visa, Immigration does not accept joint accounts with anyone other than a spouse. So marry your girlfriend and that solves that issue.

Real estate or businesses can be in your girlfriend's name, obtain the services of a lawyer to create a power of attorney for you over the property/business.

The round about methods used by the OP in trying to establish his girlfriend as a beneficiary to his assets in Thailand and not simplified as I quoted above, means that he probably does not fully trust his girlfriend.

I signed a will writen in English, however it do's not state any kind of service charges if they act on your demise. I also was obliged to sign the Thai copy also.

So there it hangs.

To get married is not a problem affection wise, we decided from day one not complicate assests in Thailand or UK by getting hitched.

All major assests within Thailand are in my girlfreinds name so that is no problem, I was thinking about monies in the Thailand bank ie: depsits for visa compliance.

Thanks for your comments.
