I've read in the expatmotors website that you can get a letter from the embassy and register a car even if you don't have a work permit.

However, is it possible to own a car if your Visa status is that of a TR (tourist Visa) ?

On the other hand, I understand citizens of neighbouring ASEAN countries can drive in LOS with driving licences issued by their native countries. So do I need a Thai DL or International DL ?

You can own a car holding any visa.

You get a letter stating your address from the local immigration office. Bring some supportive paperwork, such as a rental agreement when you apply for that paper.

For short stays you'll need an international drivers license along with your national one.

If you plan to stay longer it is advisable to get yourself a Thai license. For this however you need to hold a non immigrant visa! If you have your international license, no examination has to be done to get a Thai one.

For the licence question we need to know your nationality :D

You can't get a Thai licence unless you have a non-immigrant visa of some sort, a tourist visa won't cut it :o

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

You can own a car. You nned a certificate of resident from the immigration. To get this paper you need to whow a rental agreement, sometimes a Namecard is enought. It's depend where do you living.

You can't get a Thai drive license with a tourist visa. Therefore you need a Non Imm. But you can own a car and get a insurance (because you could hire a driver).

I know I have owned cars on toursit visa and I think even once back on 30 days stamps.. But it depends on which office and who you ask.

As you have a non-immigrant visa, it is no problem for you to legally own a car. However, anyone who does not have a non-immigrant visa may not be the legally registered owner of a vehicle in Thailand.

“A foreigner who has a non-immigrant visa can legally own a vehicle in Thailand"

“Phuket Immigration can provide a document to notify the address of a foreigner who is staying in Thailand more than 90 days. This will be done only for those holding a non-immigrant visa.

Explains it can be an O as well as a B..

What do I need to do with a Singapore DL ?

I'm surprised that I still need an International DL. If I drive a Singapore registered car to Malaysia and then Thailand, do I need to convert to an IDL while at Thailand ?
