Job/working In Thailand

Recommended Posts

I am a British girl (thai father) coming to Thailand in January to live in Thailand and learn Thai. I would also like to work but am having trouble finding work. Does anyone know if there are opportunities for farang apart from teaching English?

I am a graduate, will be learning Thai but also need to support myself. Are there any companies that take on Non Thais speaking people. I want to work legally. Any ideas/opportunities that anyone can recommend? I plan to be there for quite some time. I am also looking at accomodation.

Marisa.......it all depends on your qualifications and your work experiences. Do you specialise in any field? You may require a work permit if you want to work here and depending on the employer, some may not want to employ a non-Thai.

You indicated you are here to learn Thai......do you intend to work full time or part time?

Accomodation will depend on location, your budget and one's lifestyle.

Hi Marisa:

Have you checked out the Classifieds at:

2 other things, you don't mention how long you're looking to stay, nor do you mention whether or not your [Thai] father (or his family) will be helping you out. Having a Thai father may be a big plus.

Anyhow, best of luck - and enjoy your time here

Hi

Thanks for those links! I will definitely have a look.

I plan to stay in Thailand for about 6 months or so, depends on money etc. I do have family and friends in Thailand but don't want to lean on them too much! I DO have a Thai passport and birth certificate (aswell as British passport), but I am not sure about the implications of using the Thai passport (am I allowed to have 2?). If I am questioned (for whatever reason!? They might find it strange that I can't (yet) speak much Thai. But I am sure having the Thai passport can make it easier to work legally, no matter what I do? I do want to work and learn Thai but I also want to have time to explore Thailand.

Hmmm

Things are very flexible at the moment. All I have is the plane ticket.

I think I will also apply for the Non immigrant visa just to be on the safe side. Yes I do specialise in Design. (But more of a design manager). I have relevant experience, but I feel my skills are transferable to many areas of work.

I guess it's really the bureacracy and language that are the main barriers. I am not looking to earn lots of money, just enough to keep me going and something to keep me busy (away from all the amazing food and shops). I just want a condo/appartment for one - safe but basic I guess.

Absolutely no need for you to get a visa on your british passport and enter thailand on it.Just use your thai passport.Dont worry about dual citizenship.Being a thai doesn't mean that you must have to speak thai :D You can come here on a thai passport and i assure there will be no any kinda problem as there are lots of half thai children anywhere in the world. So Immigration is quite used to it.Just come here and be a thai. You can look for jobs as a normal thai citizen does. You can find any kind of work you wanna do without having any work permit. So don't worry and think yourself a thai citizen and act like one.In Thailand,You will not have any difficulty in finding a job coz you are a thai who graduated from UK. :D But on the other hand,If you still stubborn and wanna use your british passport and wanna enter here as a foreigner, then it will be very hard for you to find any kind of job.Even teaching job is not easier to find now a days ! :o

Believe she is going to need a Thai ID card to work as a Thai so that procedure should probably be planned first. I would talk with Embassy as to what will be required as they probably have experience advising people on this if nobody here can provide details.

I agree Lop.But I don't think that it's going to be like cliffhanging for her to get her Thai ID card.I think the required document to file for an ID card application would be her birth certificate, her parent's ID cards, their marriage registration and offcourse her thai passport.I m not sure if this procedure can be done at the embassy or this has to be done at an amphur in thailand. She needs to contact embassy for details.

Not to be pedantic ..... but.

You will find it much more of an advantage when applying for jobs here to emphasise that you are a native Engish speaking UK national with Thai Citizenship, not a Thai citizen - who also speaks little or no Thai.

There are hundreds of native Thai speaking Thai's who Graduated from overseas Universities but they only attract Thai level salaries - apply as a UK national and you have much more chance of getting an "Expat" type benefit package, particularly because the prospective Employer would realise that they will have no problem with Visas and Work Permits if they employ you.

I second that.

My wife is the proof.Thai ethnicity,Aussie and Thai national, educated in the west, working as a senior manager at a MN in Bangkok on an expat package. The comparative thai wage would have been significantly less.

Thanks for all your replies!

I will definitely apply for the ID card but the only problem is that my father left so long ago that he does not have one! My mother is not Thai, but they did have their marriage registered in Thailand.

So does having a Thai passport mean that I am considered a Thai citizen!?

Secondly when I leave the UK airport do I use the British passport and then when I reach BKK the Thai one? Or do I just leave on the Thai passport in the UK and use it when I reach BKK too?

You depart with British passport and arrive Thailand using Thai passport - always use the passport of the county you enter/exit is the basic rule. When you exit Thailand you may have to show British passport to airline so they know you do not need a visa if your travel is to a country where it is required. Airlines and immigration most places have understanding of dual passports as many travelers have them.

All Thai over 15 should have ID cards and a unique number and should be listed from birth on a home register and you may need this information even if no current ID card is available. I would advise talking over your specific case with the Thai Embassy if you can as there may be old paperwork that you can bring with you to help your process along. Sorry I don't have specific information for you.
