Tvs From Thailand To Canada / North America

Hiya.

I've got a couple of tvs that I would like to bring back to Canada with me when I relocate - does anyone have any insight on this? Is there any way to make them work in Canada without causing a minor explosion?

They are LG tvs, and when I asked LG, they responded with "I don't know". Gosh, if the technical department of the company that makes these things doesn't know, I don't feel so stupid anymore.

Thanks for any advice.

Thailand uses the PAL TV standard and North America is NTSC so unless you have a multi-region TV it won't work, plus the voltage in North America is 110V, and in Thailand 220V, so it would need to be universal voltage also, otherwise a minor explosion is more than possible :o .

If they are modern LCD or Plasma's then there's a good chance they will work. Tellys made for the Asian market tend to have multi-band tuners and multi-standard decoders.

Check the power voltage plate on the back, if it says 100-250V AC (or something close) you won't need a transformer, otherwise you'll need a 110-220V step-up transformer.

Check your manual, chances are they will display PAL (Thailand) or NTSC (N. America) without adjustment.

Let us know the exact model numbers so a web search can be performed to clarify exactly what you have :o

That's a Multi-Region and Universal Voltage model so should be fine :o .

That's great news.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. You've been a lot more helpful than the LG people!

Have a great weekend.

Don't even try it. Waste of money and they won't work - plus - LG??? "LG"= Lousy Goods. Leave the junk in Thailand.

Whilst I'm not a great fan of Korean kit I've never had serious issues with LG.

What makes you say a universal voltage, multi-system TV won't work in N America?

My friend tried the same thing and ZAP!! Had a universal voltage, multi-system TV.

If it went 'ZAP' it maybe the voltage required toggling to 110V ? If it's universal voltage there really should be no problem

I would humbly suggest that your friends' unit was damaged in transit (and died on power up), rather than giving it 110V which killed it :o

You may be right - I'll email him for details. Just seems crazy to me to ship a TV across the Pacific Ocean. She better really pack that sucker right!

:o IMPORTANT....

I don't know if it is a LCD or some other solid state screen. BUT if it is an old style picture tube, and you intend to transfer it by air....CHECK WITH THE AIRLINE FIRST. An old style picture tube could explode with the pressure changes in flight. That would not only destroy your television, but possibly damage the plane. If it is a sold state LED or LCD display, there shouldn't be any problem. But check with the airlines anyhow, they may have to approve it before they will carry it (the regs were written some years back when picture tube telivisons were the norm, and T.V.s may still be on the airlines no-carry list).

Otherwise you won't be able to check it as baggage, you may end up buying a seat to carry it into the cabin, Or the airlines simply won't let you take it at all due to the danger of an explosion (for the old style picture tube T.V.s)

Same goes for Plasma TV's. They are pressurized and explode at alltitude. I remember when they first came out, many companies where air freighting them with disastrous results.

Why would any-one transport a tv or any electrical items from Thailand to Canada? There are always sales going on at various outlets where more often than not they are cheaper , plus you get a full , genuine warranty on you purchase . Should you be going to Ontario , there is a provincial consumers law that covers you for any goods or service that does not suit the purpose for which it was intended, all money back !!!
