Retirement Bring Personal Property With You

Featured Replies

As the title of this thread reads, I'd like to know whether its possible to bring personal property such as a motor vehicle, motor bike, TV and other possessions with ne when I eventually settle in Thaliand or whether these items would be subject to punary tax by the customs people.

I've read a great deal about the financial requirements needed to qualify fir a retirement visa, but I'm not aware of the rules relating to transfering personal possesions to LOS

Can someone enlighten me on this issue

Thanks heaps

Roderick

All will be subject to tax. Motor vehicles would probably not be a good import as tax is likely to be very high.

OK.

Forget the vehicles, check out the motoring forum for the reasons.

In the past retirees were permitted to import personal posessions free of duty, I'm pretty sure this has now been stopped :o

Depending upon where you come from (particularly North America), TVs and other electrics may or may not work here. Whilst converters are available it usually isn't economic to go through the hassle. Often best to leave them at home and buy new here.

If you use one of the door-to-door services they should be able to minimise the amount of duty payable (and on stuff like clothes etc. it's not punitive), let us know where you're coming from and people will be able to recommend.

Bring anything high value and portable (laptop, camera etc etc) as luggage on your flight, little danger of customs problems then.

Don't happen to have a Thai spouse do you? Free import of personal posessions (exept vehicles) for returning Thais :D

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I moved here last year and shipped over most of my personal posessions.

Motor vehicles can not be imported if you are on a retirement visa.(type O Non Immi)

You can bring electrical appliances,as long as only one of each and in used condition.

Certain items such as playing cards and short wave radios are prohibited.

Food and alchohol requires an import permit, then taxed up to 343%

I utilised a freight company, try a google on transpo asian tigers.

I ended up paying about 6k bt for import duties.

Why would any one bring food with their family possessions?

I am not aware that SW receivers are forbidden. I brought one with me.

However transceivers are subject to licence and special regulations.

The RAST http://www.qsl.net/rast/ can assist here.

The comments on electrical items are valid. Thailand has a 220V 50Hz supply.

Many years ago I did import a 20ft container of household items.

The agent negotiated a reasonable, and all inclusive "fee".

I judged that cheaper than selling and buying again.
