I find Bangkok people very stand-offish and unfriendly, a bit like London.

I think that goes for city people worldwide. Something to dow tih being busy and working and living in a constant city environment I suppose.

To me the Bangkok people are very far away from the famous reputation of 'Land of Smiles' which is unfortunate since the Airport that brings all the tourists is right there. I can imagine what the tourist must think when they first see these people who's reputation, world wide, is, they always have a smile.

I'm not sure most Bangkokians are worried about waking up everyday and making a point of smiling for people that come here on holiday. Not as if they all work for the tourist industry is it?

Is stand offish nasty? What do you expect them to do, run around smiling and making conversations with every tourist they see?

Personally I don't have a problem with Bangkok people, and no problem being friendly with them or getting it back. It depends on yourself to a degree. Perhaps you are someone best avoided bratpack?

I agree with Burman. After living in San Francisco for about 6 years I can see many similarities between the cosmopolitan set there and in Bangkok. Totally inflated unrealistic sense of self worth, concerned about image and status... too good to talk to some people, always have to be busy or rushing off somewhere. Can't spend a Friday night just around the house, have to be at a club, being seen. No sense of compassion or dignity.

I don't think the problems people mention here are unique to Bangkok or Thai people. I am living in Bangkok now because I am studying Thai but I've always known city life is not for me and I look forward to a more tranquil retreat in the near future.

I will have a chat to my thai friends in Pattaya and see what they think.Wonder if my thai friend, the big police guy agrees with you or not.

Yep, go and ask the big police guy and report back to us. We'll know who's right then. :o

Thats up to you to decide burman.I make my own observations about bk and listen to many people who love or hate the place, then i make my point on here.Whether i am a person to avoid has got nothing to do with this forum.

How big percentage of the population in BKK are these people representing?

I think it depends on what kind of person you are and what you are looking for in your lifestyle. Overall, I found that the quality of people in Bangkok, both farangs AND foreigners is better than other popular places. Pattaya is a s**thole for example

After a few recent visits to friends and family in Pattaya and BKK, I would have to say that those in Pattaya seem friendlier.

Then again big cities like BKK in any country can seem unfriendly places IMHO

Doubt that you will have to avoid Bratpack as judging by the fact he has 250 plus posts in 21 days, he never strays far from his best friend..... his computer... lol :o

I think you are right there, but things are not always what they seem.

Also I would say that Pattaya may seem more friendly to you because it's a major tourist town, and wherever you go you are in contact with the tourist industry and the associated smiles that go along with it.

No tourist industry in bk?????????????????????

No associated smiles in bk????????????????????????

Next you will be saying no tourist female guides and no bar girls.

oops forgot no freelancers in the bars and clubs too lol.

Bangkok of course has tourism, but it's not as full on as Pattaya. Pattaya is built from tourism, Bangkok isn't.

Not too hard to work out is it?

You were making the excuse that bk is unfriendly because Pattaya is a major tourist area.I only pointed out that the remarks you made of Pattaya can be very similar to bk.Agree Pattaya is nearly all tourist compared to BK but dont make this a reason why bk people are unfriendly. The posts suggest that anyway without trying to give reasons why.I think you lot have been sussed out by many and dont like it.Maybe i should look back and find some of the racists remarks from bk posts, way before i come on here.

In fact since i have come on here,i have been shocked by some bk farang posts and didnt know about this type of culture other than meeting a few nobs and a few greedy greedy thai girls. There are quite a few bar girls from bk and they are quite racist here too,as i ask them questions to try and understand this bitter racism in Thailand..

Yes mate, just ask the bar girls, you will soon get the full balanced picture. :o

^^ I didn't even say bkk people were unfriendly bratpack. :o

I did because I think they are!

Can I ask how many of them you know? How long you have spent in Bangkok? Have you lived in Bangkok or just a tourist in Bangkok? It all makes a difference you know.

After listening to many various posts and living in land of smirks for 5 years i was wondering what the posters think of bk people.

I will not comment on this but would love to read other guys and gals thoughts.

If only it were true.

burman,

i AGREE it can make a difference, but the post was never intended for me to quote,i asked what other people think but as i am the one to start the post i am the victim now lol.A few posters feel that the place is very cold and as i said before,i dont hate bk but was shocked when i first came on here how racist some of the posts were. Also i would never meet some of the people because i am a person that doesnt mingle with the hi-so no more.i was a national sales manager and have had my fill of posh places, expensive wine and food and the artificial people.Bangkok reminds me of these type of people that i had to deal with on a daily basis, and there will be some nob who corrects me on a capital letter or comma.

Getting back to your post,i have been to bk quite a few times since i retired and lived in Pattaya,in fact my first visit was to bk and i hated it.Not been for a while because my eyes get so irratable within one hour of getting there and spolis my couple of nights.Got a couple of mates from bk who are getting worse for being snobs.

Forgot to mention i have many friends here who are married or have gf,but the 4 who have wives from bk or slightly more north are very greedy women and moan all the time, never happy,if they have 5 baht gold they want 10.Not nice women i can assure you. When i was renting,my landlady was thai bk and she was horrible too, trying to get more money out of me for things that were wrong before i moved in,then laughing when i said no, as though, well i tried.

I think we can all safely say, it's not so much about the people in the area, but who you choose to mix with and how you are with them people yourself.
