Thaksin's assassination plot just a laugh: Sathirapan

BANGKOK: -- Navy chief Adminral Sathirapan Keyanont on Tuesday played down a claim about a possible plot to assassinate former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, saying it was good for a laugh.

Sathirapan was reacting to comments by retired supreme commander General Chaisit Shinawatra who claimed last weekend Thaksin's opponents might have put out a contract.

He said the matter did not warrant any consideration.

Didn't he (Toxin) try that same line before, pre-coup days ? Tried to cook up a story to make him look like a victim (possibly around the time the <deleted> was hitting the fan over the Shin sale ?).

Thaksin said yesterday that he had been the target of failed assassination plots on at least two occasions in the past two weeks. He claimed one happened when he was getting off his official plane at the Don Muang air force base, but he did not elaborate. The premier has made similar claims over the past six years, although none have been proven.

He also alleged there were three attempts to assassinate him in August before a group of generals removed him from office while he was visiting the United Nations in September. Without offering names or evidence, Mr. Thaksin alleged that military personnel were behind the assassination attempts.

"Sometimes, as a leader you must have an angry face*. In the past, I have ignored these allegations published in the Thai media, with whom I have no relationship. The foreign media has since picked them up and this is damaging. Now you are asking me these questions and I am happy to answer."

"These figures you have read are not true. They are figures created by the military. I was not a ruthless dictator. No. There have been investigations: The Premier League, for example, has ways of investigating these matters, I welcomed the Fit and Proper Persons Test for new owners for that reason." He is now free to return to his homeland in return for agreeing to stay out of politics for five years and to concentrate on his "football interests."

They might as well say the reports of the Holocaust are not true.... or that only one person died at Pearl Harbor...

What about the reports of almost 3,000 killings in an aggressive offensive against drugs?
