Asia ; Four more dead in violence in Thai Muslim south

Asia News, BANGKOK: Four more people have been killed in Muslim-majority southern Thailand, police said today, amid outrage over the death last week of 85 Muslims, most of them in military custody.

Police said unidentified bandits shot dead two state railway workers in the southern province of Narathiwat, where 85 Muslim protesters died last week, 78 of them of suffocation after being arrested and crammed into army trucks.

''Preliminary investigations show there were two bandits who killed the officials with shotguns,'' a police spokesman said.

''They put their bodies on the tracks. A train sliced them into three pieces.'' Around 450 people have died in a 10-month wave of violence that erupted in January when militants stormed an army camp in Thailand's remote south bordering Malaysia, killing four soldiers and making off with several hundred assault rifles.

With no signs the mainly Buddhist government in Bangkok is any closer to coming up with policies or answers to solve the unrest, the daily cycle of shootings and explosions appears to be accelerating.

In separate incidents on Thursday, a Buddhist police major was shot in the head at his family grocery store in neighbouring Yala province and a Buddhist monk was shot and severely wounded after a religious ceremony in nearby Songkhla, officials said.

Yesterday, a father and son were ambushed on a road near their home in Narathiwat. The father was killed but his son survived with shotgun wounds to his hand, police said.

Does that mean that the Police and the Army did not kill 76 innocent people a few days ago?
