Road Improvements On Koh Phangan

Featured Replies

Has work on the Chaloklum - Thongsala road been completed and if so has it been widened all the way to Chaloklum?

Does anyone have information on other planned road improvements for the island?

I live in Chaloklum part of the year and was told the unpaved road running from the big Chaloklum Temple to the main Chaloklum road (by the elephant safari) was going to be paved. Anyone know more?

they made good progress and they are busy working there towards Chaloklum, right now they are at the top of the hill with making the bed for the concrete. It will give a supper kind of street on the island. I guess that's the new profil for mainstreets. Also on the street to TNP they working, new columns for the new cables are errected, cutting trees along and normaly after that, the street is the next step, I've heard they have the credit for this road to TNP.

Had Yao - Had Salad can be driven now all on concrete, but not finished yet.

I honestly do not know how they saw the sense to RE-pave the chaloklum road this year and not do any work on the TNP road. The electrical work has been done by the electric company not the local gov. The road is in a terrible state now and just last week I saw the most horrific accident on the road where a boy was nearly nearly crippled. The accident happened only because of the road conditions and not through human error. Both people involved in the accident were on school runs i.e. unavoidable journeys. It is shocking and I am so fed up of hearing that it will be finished this year....I won't believe it until I see it!

indeed, it is amazing how little they seem to care or doing a real planing for such an place like TNP, really unprofessional or maybe slowly because going through kind of national park reg. the dens jungle area on the hills? Anyway I can't understand that either. Just the waist of hardware (cars etc.) driving everyday this street. Some great mismanagement :D

but keep on think positive :o my bike I guess would appreciate it too

As far as I am aware ham, that is the reason for the road in TNP not being paved all the way, it runs through the National Park. I believe permission is needed or the parks dept needs to do it. Not sure which, but that is the reason I have been told.

the tnp road is great, much much better than it used to be, i am just grateful it is not like it was years ago

Honestly, I drive that road twice a day and have no idea how can you call it great? Years ago there was a lot less traffic. There are now many more people living here and relying on the road, plus the psycho lorry drivers who drive so fast forcing everyone else off the road. It may be in a better state than it was a few years ago, but I am sure it is more dangerous.

I have heard the national parks argument too, however it doesn't explain why random sections (usually the worst) have been paved. The concrete on these parts though is in really bad condition and no new paving has been done for over a year. As my friend explained to me, the reason the road has not been completely done is that whenever money is earmarked for it, it "goes on holiday" :o

maybe some interested parties would raher keep tnp inacessible.

i dont know how long you have been using that road but 5 or 6 years ago you couldnt even use it when it rained, it is much safer now. i do agree though as soon as there is concrete the locals drive far too fast

Isn't easy to take them by speed boat fom Samui, and bring them back..... :o
