Does any one have experience with using an HSBC account for retirement visa renewal? The problem I envisage is that there is no passbook issued for the account. Will the last 3 months' statements from the bank (+ letter confirming that 800K was brought in from overseas) be enough to satisy the authorities ?

That should work (you are talking about a Thai account?). Hopefully someone who uses that method can confirm. Letter would also have to confirm current account balance as always.

Yes, HSBC Bangkok are fully au fait with documentation requirements for Retirement Visa, and I have used their letters twice without any problem. (I have also had the funds on fixed deposit for three months prior), as opposed to them being in a savings account, and this has been acceptable to Immigration.

Many thanks to you and to Lopburi for prompt and helpful replies
