Pattaya police nab German diamond thief

PATTAYA: -- Police in Thailand's tourist resort of Pattaya in the eastern Chonburi Province have arrested a 42 year-old German national wanted by Berlin for stealing diamonds, worth over Bt1.5 million.

Mr. Karsten was well known to the German Embassy in Bangkok for masterminding diamond heists in his native country before fleeing to Thailand to evade arrest.

Pattaya police said today that the German was arrested after they received a tip-off that he was preparing to launch a raid on Pattaya gemstone shops.

Mr. Karsten, who has initially been charged with staying in the kingdom illegally following the expiry of his visa, will be handed over to the German Embassy for eventual extradition.
