I would think it's because it helps to flush toxins out of your system... one glass of water with lemon/lime juice in the morning also helps :o

I think you've just outlined the myth in detail. I don't think the body 'flushes'.

But of course water is good for you obviously.

So you are telling all that read this that is is a myth. Looking forward to your physiological analysis as to why. If you want to debunk, then show why as some people may believe your comment.

No I'm not telling anybody and I don't have any scientific background. And I stand ready to be corrected, particularly from a skin specialist.

During my teens and twenties I had skin problems, mostly to do with acne, and still do now.

It was explained to me by specialists that skin problems were largely not a product of diet and I have read similar articles in magazines and on the net, study for yourself.

Obviously water is vital to good health, and plain water meets this need without any side effects, unlike coffee for instance. So in this respect it wins hands down.

But as I understand some major organs and glands are very good at filtering impurities, so that by the time the liquid reaches your skin it is 'pure' although not in the sense that it is free from chemicals, minerals and sugars as this is what health tissue needs.

The idea that we can flush out impurities just doesn't stand as our bodies work on osmosis and filtration.

So there really is no evidence that drinking fresh water improves the look and feel of our skin.

But what's your justification, I'd be interested to hear and after all I'm not a scientist.

Water is good for the whole body in the morning. During a nights sleep we loose a lot of water. Much of this loss is through the skin because of sweating or because we sleep in dry air conditioned environment, we also exhale a lot of moisture breathing. Most people are dehydrated after a nights sleep, more so if there was some alcohol had the night before.

Drinking a lot of water the first thing when you wake up is the best you do. Just look at all the other creatures on the planet, the first thing they do in the morning is to find water and drink.

Splashing water on your face several times during the day and letting the skin absorb it is also very good and will keep your skin moisturized. Why spend money on "moisturizers" when you have concentrated moisture for free on tap??

Most "moisturizers" do not add any moisture at all, just chemicals (some dangerous) that make your skin feel good.

Sure agreed, but this is a general point to do with the necessity of water, it does not prove that drinking 3 cups in the morning will improve your skin appearance long term beyond the intake of any moisture required to sustain good health gained howsoever.

Most likely people feel better, and water might perk them up quicker as will a cup of tea, a piece of fruit, etc.

The argument put is a myth I think.

As I understand it the following are important though I don't bother:

1, Avoiding sunlight -just take a look at the skin on your inner arms.

2, certain medicines.,eg, retin A.

3, Sensible cleansing, to a limited extent as the last poster state, probaly wash lightly with warm water and close pores with cool.

I always drink alot of water and green tea in the morning and it has helped me alot, but if I eat fried eggs and bacon, I just feel like going back to sleep. I have heard that drinking only water for breakfast is called a Japanese Breakfast.

Tea also contains antioxidants and wins hands down over plain water for sure.

Most moisture is good :o , come on let's not get too purist folks.

It's really this idea that you can flush impurities away that really needs sorting- it's a myth I reckon.

What's more it encourages the belief that we can go out drink and eat a lot of bad food and wash away the effects, just like we can wash dirt off by taking a shower or having a bath.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that!!

Incidentally. it's also a myth that you need to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Heck I'd have died ages ago.

Those days of the information flood, people are concerned about all sorts of things, since Beer contains 90% water and Vitamin B, yeasts, carbohydrates... well, I prefer to drink beer, instead of water!

However, as one cannot have beer for breakfast I have approx. up to one liter of plain water/liquids as green tea/fruit juice, in the morning as I feel thirsty, not bothered about it's health benefits yes/no!

for those who might be interested: check this out:

It would be good if some medical bod coud give a run down on how our body assimilates liquid and relationship to skin tone.

I see beer is now good for you, same goes for choc, tea, coffee, and even nicotine.

I guess it's about balance.

3 glasses of water a day seems reasonable.

But for sure jgirl, it's this idea of flushing with water that is the myth I think.

check this out. It's an extreme example for sure but illustrates the stupidity of the flushing concept.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10...in-damaged.html

If the link doesn't work, it's basically self explanatory- you see the body needs 'impurities' and this poor woman suffered an extreme sodium deficiency.

3 cups of water wouldn't do this, and is in fact a good idea, but it won't make you more beautiful or handsome.

You are correct in a way, it depends on your frame of reference. Very large amounts of water will not do you any good, excess drinking of water will not turn you into cosmetics model over night, all correct.

The thing is that water will flush your body from impurities.

Your metabolism, kidneys and liver will remove impurities if they function properly. For these systems to work they need a certain amount of water. If you do not get enough water your body will not be able to remove the impurities and this will affect your entire body, including your skin. So water will flush your system and give you healthy skin but it's just a matter of getting enough NOT more is better.

Drinking water in the morning, an hour before you eat anything, will have some added benefits. As your body is dehydrated after a nights sleep the water you drink will be distributed to where you need it and much of this will be to your skin from where you have lost most of the water during the night, this will give you better skin.

If you skip the water in the morning and only drink with food in your stomach much of the water will go to your metabolism and your skin will suffer. Also if you drink in the morning your skin will be better re hydrated and better prepared to take the punishment of your working day, better prepared will mean less damage and a better skin.

You mentioned before that 6-8 glasses per day is not correct, I agree with that.

The 6-8 glasses per day originated from a recommendation from the US National Research Council that was adopted by doctors and widely publicized as the definitive recommendation on water intake.

The recommendation was correct but the problem was that the last sentence in the recommendation was never publicized, this is what the original recommendation looked like:

"A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 milliliter for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods."

Note the last sentence!!

Most people living in temperate climate and not doing any physical work will probably only need about 1 liter of water (liquids) per day, apart from what they get through their food.

How much you should drink depends on many things so this amount could vary enormously on the situation. The thing is to little or to much could be very dangerous.

If you drink to little you will get thirsty, urine will be dark, headaches, cramps. If you drink to much there may be no signs until it's to late.

If you are thirsty or have any signs of dehydration drink, if not don't drink :o

Thanks for the clarification- just what was called for.

To para phrase then we need a certain amount of water to keep healthy and there is a cleansing element to fresh water up to a point

But do you know if that cleansing element extends to the skin- after all it is a major organ of sorts?

I think that is the crux of the matter.

My guess is OP wakes up feeling grogg, a bit dehydrated, with sleepy eyes, and dried skin due to air conditioning. She then very sensibly drinks a few cups of water which makes her feel a whole lot better, and gradually her body is restored to it's normal radiant beauty.

Like you say the skin is a major organ, actually the largest in our body and it will be kept healthy by an adequate intake of water.

But, another way for the skin to keep healthy is to excrete substances through glands in the skin, some waste some to keep the skin healthy. By frequent use of "moisturizers" and other cosmetics this function will be blocked and there will be problems with the skin. This is usually self treated with even more gunk applied to the face.

Initially these applications may give a short term affect of healthy skin but in the long term it's just bad, apart from bad skin you will also absorb all sorts of toxins that will give you other problems.

A mild soap once a day and just plain water splashed on the face several times a day will keep the skin healthy.
