My Acer computer has suddenly developed a problem.

I can connect to True internet but cannot download any pages.

Other programs/functions I have used so far seem to have no problem.

I had the True engineer round who has checked out the modem and the line and tells me that the problem is with the computer.

We tried a system restore (3 dates) but all failed to complete.

The engineer suggests that some Acer drivers have been corrupted and that the hard disk needs to be reformated.

This sounds rather drastic to me with the loss of data and other programs likely.

Any advice / suggestions would be welcome.

I don't think its going to be that bad.  It is most like the browser settings.  What os and browser are you using.  Edit our post and fill in some info like that along with connection type adsl modem dial up Sat etc.  If true tech connected his laptop and modem checked out its more like to be just your browser set up.  or just add a post.

I think the problem is more complex than that. I have tried two different browsers and anti-virus update requests are also not connecting to the servers. Basically just getting CANNOT FIND SERVER, DNS error and The page cannot be displayed messages all the time.

Help!

Try changing DNS, e.g. Open DNS etc.

Try using the True proxy.

Check your firewall settings. If using Zone Alarm see what happens if you revert to the Windows firewall.

May I ask, do you mean you can 'see' the page but not download to the PC, or you can't see the page at all?

Regards

PS Are you using the same connexion through another computer to visit this site?

This indeed looks like a dns issue. Go to start menu, run, cmd and enter ipconfig/all, this will give you the DNS server that is being used, make a note of that IP address (or addresses).

Then in the same command window, enter nslookup. Enter www.thaivisa.com and see if you get an answer, the answer should look something like:

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: thaivisa.com

Address: 203.174.84.82

Aliases: www.thaivisa.com

If there is an error, then it is indeed the setup of your DNS server, and you need to change that.

I am making regular trips to my local internet shop to post these messages.

When I connect to True I get the Navigator frame on the screen but it eventually fills up with the "this page cannot be displayed" text.

IE Explorer and Firefox also just show the frame outline but no content.

Update downloads cannot find the server'

However the True engineer pinged the connection and it works OK. He also tested with his lap-top OK.

I will try the other suggestions but not too confident especially as I have had 2 people tinkering around with IP addresses, proxies etc with no success.

I will switch off Zone Alarm (should have tried that before).

Thanks to all

Zone Alarm seems to be the culprit.

I adjusted the slider switches for the Firewall Internet Zone Security and Trusted Zone Security to off and am now back on-line. I have now reset them back to medium and things are still working.

Very annoying as my Zone Alarm set-up always requests permission to allow incoming programs, but for some unknown reason has decided to start blocking incoming wed pages and updates without notification.

Thanks

Glad you are on-line. There was a DNS update from MS which caused some problems with Zone Alarm. There's a patch LINK available from the Zone Alarm site. Might be worth putting that in place. An alternative, and free firewall is Comodo which is a good quality alternative.

As an aside, True DNS went down sometime last night - don't know if it's back on or not, but I took that opportunity to switch to OpenDNS.

OpenDNS, believe it or not, actually appears to be faster. Doesn't make any sense to me, unless the True DNS servers were so overloaded with queries that they simply responded slowly.
