Can any one suggest some reasonable, clean, hotels in Mae Sai and in Pai?

Mae Sai is on the border with Myanmar . Pai is about halfway between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Sohn.

Sawadee.com does not include these cities on it's website, so it appears difficult to book at these places via the internet.

Any suggestions will be most welcome. Am looking for CLEAN 2-3 star hotels.

hi, well regarding pai there is not a great choice ,

in the same street as the bus terminal there is an hotel,

come guest house [nothing brilliant] but o.k.

be at the bus station early , on both your outward

and especially on your return journey , in order to

have a plank of wood, (seat).

at mae sai , avoid top north hotel, it is due for a refit

head for uncle john,s restaurant , turn a left before the

border bridge, and its 50 metre s on the right .

the food is really good , and try to meet this guy ,

he sure is a font of knowledge .

100 metres further along this road , take a sharp left

and on the hill, is a very good modern hotel . i think

it is called S hotel . p.p. off bus at mae sai, mini bus will drop

you off outside top north hotel 50 bht. a short walk to bridge . :o

What do you mean by "reasonable"? If you could state a price range maybe I could help. Thailand doesn't have a star system, at least not officially, so not sure what you mean by 2-3 stars.

In Pai the only places that take reservations, as far as I can tell, are the top-enders costing over 2000B a night, eg, Baan Krating Pai Resort and Belle Villa. In Mae Sai the best place is Wang Thong Hotel.

Lonely Planet's guide to Chiang Mai & Northern Thailand, or the larger one on all of Thailand, has rates and phone numbers for accoms in both places. You won't find much on Mae Sai or Pai on the Internet ...

Best bet in Mae Sai is to check out the better rooms in the better 'guesthouse' type places in the road along the river (turn left just before the big Customs building). One or two quite pleasant places along here, aircon and sat TV/hot water is available - much better than the hotel's in Mae Sai.

Top North as mentioned is, I think, a pretty standard Thai hotel. The one supposedly international standard place, Wang Thong (big place on the right just before the border) looked to be on the slide last time I saw it. Had all the hallmarks of a place struggling to find the cash to maintain itself. Put the parents in there and they had to take turns to sit under the one working light for their bedtime reading! Having a bathtub when the hot water didn't work wasn't much use either. My 300 baht guesthouse room was much better.

Thanks guys.

Sawadee has suggested the folowing places :

Sawadee hotels in Pai:

http://www.sawadee.com/thai/bellevillapai/

http://www.sawadee.com/thai/baankratingpai/

and in Mae Sai:

http://www.sawadee.com/thai/wangthong/

Any experince with these places ?

The problem with trying to get in at guest house type places is that they aren't on the internet, so one can't book on-line. Also, there aren't any pics & facilities to see

before booking -unpleasant surprises might await one on arrival.

Want to spend 3-4 days each at Pai & at Mae Sai, just want to get off the beaten (tourist) track . Reckon that these places are suitable.?

Have been to both Pai & Mae Sai for a few hours each. Pai reminded me of a wild west type place , some odd looking (farang) characters around. Mae Sai seemed to be no different from any other small Thai town, other than that it was on the border with Myanmar.

Will one get bored in three -4 days at each place ? Not interested in trekking , just want to relax in a non touristy place having with a few bars etc.

By 'reasonable' I mean: clean, having a bath / toilet attached to one's room, having one's room cleaned & towels, sheets, changed everyday. No mosquitos / bed bugs.

Am willing to pay to 1,500 baht per night.

In Mae Sai, I honestly think you would be better not to book at all. For example, that Wang Thong place has 150 plus rooms and is very unlikely to be full. Walk-in will not be much more expensive than sawasdee.com rate. If I were you, I'd ask to see a room first - those pictures on the Internet look very misleading to me from what I remember of the place - unless it has been renovated in the last year (which I think is very unlikely).

Same with the guesthouses, you can check out a couple of places and ask to see the rooms before deciding. So no need for any 'unpleasant suprises'. There are a few places where you have your own bathroom with hot water, aircon, satellite TV - should be clean and decent, just without some of the trimmings and facilities that you would get in a proper hotel.

Actually, if you are thinking of 3-4 days in Mae Sai, you might want to consider making it 2 nights in Mae Sai and 1-2 nights in the mountains nearby at Mae Salong. Would probably be much better and Mae Salong has some nice places to stay, in particular Mae Salong Villa - nice villas with good views, nice restaurant too.
