Shivek
Is anyone else experiencing painfully slow BitTorrent download speeds in True from the past month? It's been a month or so and I've been getting terrible speeds. The internet works fine most of the time, but sometimes it is painfully slow along with the BT download speeds. I've noticed the BT speeds have become really slow on the weekend that I hardly even get 10 kb/s. I'm on a 1 mpbs line and before this, I used to get 80-90 kb/s all the time until recently. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I'm so sick of it that I've decided to switch to Maxnet since they've got the new promotion of 2 mbps for 590 Baht. Anyone else in Bangkok using Maxnet? How are the BT download speeds? Thanks in advance.
JetsetBkk
Try Maxnet 'Indy': - this morning 2:45 am: 350 kB/s
Shivek
Wow! Those are awesome speeds. I've contacted Maxnet since a week now, and they've not replied me yet whether they have the service available in my area or not. I'm really sick of True though. Worst ISP ever! Is anyone else planning to switch from True to another ISP?
Guest Reimar
Downloaded 1.3 GB with an average of 49.3 KB today, while within the week I get an average of up to 260 KB. That is an TRUE at Samut Prakarn. Cheers.
Shivek
Well, good for you but True at Bangkok is a totally different story. Sucks big time. JetsetBkk, which area in BKK do you live in? And since when have you been using Maxnet?
Greenside
Surely doesn't the speed depend largely on the contention ratio on your connection and how many people are actually on line at any one time? Plus (and I'm only a newbie at this) doesn't the number of seeds and peers available have an effect too?
samsara
it mostly depends on who you share the bandwidth with. end of story
niller74
Traffic Shaping ftw!! I would be surprised if they actually knew how to implement this, but P2P traffic should have low priority in placed like Thailand where the infrastructure cannot meet the bandwidth demands. IMHO
Shivek
The number of seeders/leechers don't have a relation to this as I'm on a private tracker with lots of seeders who have seedboxes, but I still my download speed doesn't get more than 10-20 kb/s, while before I used to get 80-90 kb/s so there has to be a problem with True. I called them up and they told me that they don't guarantee international download speeds, they only guarantee local which is bloody disgusting. Guest Reimar
You can be on an private Tracker but that says nothing. Still you use multiple download at the same time and that's were Traffic Shaping is come in effect. The other thing is the sharing at "your" Exchange at the time of connection. Even there isn't any ISP in Thailand which guaranty you any speed, only the maximum speed you're able to get! Cheers.
Shivek
What are you trying to say? I've been using it for a long time and always got speeds of 80-90 kb/s which is the highest a 1 mbps connection can give, but now whatever I download I can't get even near that speed and it's not because there are few seeders or something. I'm getting nowhere near my maximum speeds. I don't think True are throttling P2P file-sharing (AKA Traffic Shaping) so the cause to my problem is that True have probably over-expanded and now they don't have enough bandwidth for all the users. I don't think True are throttling P2P file-sharing (AKA Traffic Shaping) so the cause to my problem is that True have probably over-expanded and now they don't have enough bandwidth for all the users. I think TRUE is the ISP whit the most available Bandwidth. They using mainly them's own Gateway: 122.144.28.1 tig-net28-1.trueinternetgateway.com 122.144.26.206 sg-icr-anc1-26-206.trueinternetgateway.com 122.144.28.26 TIG-Net28-26.trueinternetgateway.com But they also using in some areas still the CAT Gateway and that is much more slow than the TRUE Gateway! TRUE is throttling P2P traffic, sometimes not very efficient, but they do! May they do it by checking the amount of downloaded MB's and limit the download speed individual to some Exchanges or even User's. It is possible to do so. Take CS-L for example, on IP-Star they limit the download per month and if you had reached the limit they slow down the download to half, or even just 20%! And about the private Tracker, it doesn't matter you're connected to one private tracker only, but the download is "coming" from many different locations and not just one only! So, the ISP is able to trace that multiple downloads/connections! Cheers.
niller74
Shivek, if you are having problems with p2p traffic and nothing else, it can be one of the following reasons: 1. Your p2p software isn't configured correctly. 2. You are trying to download something which is only available from a few seeders. 3. The p2p traffic is being shaped by your ISP. It is not really that complicated. I tend to believe you are experiencing #3. p2p is teh devel!!!
Shivek
niller74, I know #3 is what I am experiencing and that is why I would like to know whether there is a solution to that problem or not? But my main question is why is that just happening to me this month? Why didn't it happen before?

Shivek
Come on, dude. Don't give me those childish answers... I've been a user for 5 years now and all of a sudden just a month ago I start having the problem which occurs only during weekends and peak hours during week days. During the mornings on week days, the download speed is fine.

I doubt they are shaping based on Traffic Accounting, but more general rules applied to the whole network. If that is so, other people should experience similar 'problems'. Shivek
Alright, thanks for the comments and exchange of views. I guess I'll stick with True for another month and see how it goes. If it would be the same, then I guess I'll go with Maxnet.

That also applies (unfortunate) to the ISP's! Traffic shaping is in place and used by several ISP's. No wonder if there users running an Internet Cafe on public account or those who done nothing but downloading day and night and so on! Cheers. I'm not a fan-boy from anything. I just want things working without hassle everytime a need to change something. Unfortunate TRUE is the best connection I can get here and I tested a few already. If there is something better, I'll change directly but it isn't yet! On the other hand many of the connection sucking and that maybe not only because of the ISP but abut the physical line system as well. Cheers. Before this problem occurred, I was exactly like you since I never had a problem with True before. I never thought any other ISP could be better than True, but when this problem occurred and continued to last for a long time, so I decided it was time to move on. But before moving on, I wanted to exchange opinions with a few hardcore users here which I have done and appreciate the replies.Cheers!
Guest Reimar
Maybe you like to download SamSpade from Thaivisa Download. With that program you can check your connection and speed in many different way and even maybe find out where the weakpoint is located. Cheers. And you cant hardly complain calling them "hi i m dlding illegally a movie from torrent and i m only getting 10k/s ...". Maybe try to do your download over night when you are sleeping and watch during day what you ve been dlding.
