Purpleyoga Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I'm going to Thailand on the 23rd Oct for 2 weeks and hoped you could recommend an area in the South to go, beach area that is ok weather wise. I know it is monsoon does this mean it will rain all day? I'm after a beautiful place to chill rather than a party place.
goldfish Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 There's no rule to rain in Thailand. The October before last it didn't rain at all in Samui, last october it rained non-stop for 4 days. Even when it stops the roads can still be a little damp

Hi Dont bother bringing an umbrella, but a trip to the army surplus store for a bullet proof vest before you leave home is recommended for many areas in the south these days. Be careful roy gsd
allcladrad Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Take a look at Khao Lok, Lots of newer hotels and guest houses as the old were washed away by the tsumami. Not big but nice beach and plenty of differnt food choices. Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga are other picks. Phuket has a number of areas to choose from, party hardy to way laid back. Do a little interent searching for hotel bargains. Phuket has the advantage of an airport. The other places will require a bus ride. The above places are on the Andaman side and are major tourist spots. What really laid back, come to Thung Wua Laen beach.

Last October it tipped it down as well. Simple fact is that if you come to Samui in October you are going to be treated to one hel_l of a Thunderstorm. Thunder like you have never heard before!!!!! OR, you might just be lucky....for a day or two!!!!!
goldfish Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Hi, samuiseagul. Not wishing to start an online argument here, or correct you, I just remember the year before last as being dry in October. I was expecting rain as I believed it to have been seriously bad the year before, with a lot of damage and even a fatality. Please feel free to inform me otherwise, have long suspected an early onset of alzheimers. As far as the op is concerned tho, southern Thailand may not be his best move in October. It may be dry, but if it rains he's probably stranded for a few days

Be careful roy gsd Armoured car too? Sorry, here's a serious question. A fellow farang friend is planning to drive down the peninsula into Malaysia and back in a Very swish, expensive car. About the same time as the OP suggests. Obviously he will stand out like a sore thumb at a wedding. Is this a Very Bad Idea? What do we think to the alleged cease fire? Can any informed farang who live in the troubled provinces (if indeed any do) advise we northerners?

But for it to be dry in October must be a first
Naut.Sirius Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 What if I *wanted* to be near a place by the ocean where I could see spectacular lightning storms.. Where would be my best bet in September or October?
allcladrad Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Surat Thani or Ranong are to pretty good bets, but you are taliking about weather, so any where on the Malay peninsula, either coast could be a choice. Add another goal to the show and your selections could be narrowed. I have thunderstorms pass by almost everyday, 24/7, but because of clouds or distance few are spectacular. Although, I have found that during the monsoon when ever I take a motorbike ride of any distance it never fails that I am forced to take cover.

Well, if you book on Air Asia within the next four hours from right now, you can get a r/t for about B2000 total price to Phuket from Bangkok. Special promotion but ends today! Fly between Aug 5 - Oct 31 only. Then book a taxi or bus to Khao Lak which is north about 1 hr away. Other places: Cha Am quiet but I think rather dirty. Take a bus or taxi there from BKK. Hua-Hin is both quite and has a small night life but go south if you want nicer beaches. You can catch a puddle jumper (12 seater) from BKK for 3,600 baht one way but only goes once a day if you don't want the 3 hr drive.
