Making Cat Access With My Existing Window

Featured Replies

hi, I just moved and am renting and I have windows that open out. So not sliding windows and not louver windows. Wood paned windows with 6 pieces of glass if you know what I mean.

I would like allow the windows to open just enough for the cats to get in and out without allowing a small person to fit in. I know it is a compromise on security but the neighborhood is good and I can lock another room in the house. however I dont want to leave the window completely open.

Does anyone have any ideas how or what to do?? Is it easy to take a piece of glass out?

Sorry if these questions seem silly.

Thanks You!~

Take a look at both sides of the window to see how the glass is held in place. In Europe, it's typically hardened putty laid in a triangular section around the glass border to the frame on the outside - there could also be a few small pins/nails tapped into the frame before the putty was applied. In Thailand, it might be just four pieces of wood (like a picture frame) pinned into place and holding the glass against the main frame - again from the outside. If it's putty, you might be able to scrape it away (carefully) with a sharp blade and then release the glass. If it's the wood frame holding the glass in place, you should be able to use a wide blade screwdriver or something similar to lever off the wood pieces - the first one being the most difficult.

After that, you could cut a piece of rigid plastic sheet (maybe from a plastic folder/binder?) very slightly smaller than the opening and secure it with some tape/pins to the cross-piece over the now empty part of the frame. With some guidance from you, the cats should get used to pushing through the opening.

Thank you. I will check in the morning! This is helpful.
