Bangkok in drive to conserve Loy Krathong traditions

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to introduce measures to ensure the conservation of traditional cultural practices relating to the Loy Krathong festival, amid growing concern that Thai festivals are becoming westernised and losing their original purpose.

Mr. Wallop Suwannadee, the Deputy Bangkok Governor, said today that the BMA was working closely with the Ministry of Culture to ensure that local children and young people were aware of the importance of conserving their cultural heritage.

The BMA will organize its own Loy Krathong ceremonies this year in the Santichai Prakarn Park and near the Rama IIX Bridge, with further details to be worked out between the BMA and the Ministry of Culture.
