Went to my local immigration office today to renew my annual retirement visa.

Now there's a new requirement!

I've been told I must supply a copy of my House Registration document [blue book], together with a map showing showing clear directions from the nearest town. Fortunately I'm able to supply these and I'm going back to my IMO tomorrow but, I'm now beginning to wonder how much longer we "farangs" are going to be wecome here. :o

Few foreigners are on the blue house registration book, I believe. Bring your rental contract instead, or some utility bills addressed to you.

Regarding the map, this is not a new requirement and I can’t understand how this could possibly make you feel less welcome in Thailand. If you want to impress your immigration officer, print the map from maps.google.com

1. Right-click at the location of the immigration office, then click on “Directions from here”

2. Right-click at the location of your residence, then click on “Directions to here”

Something else I always wonder about is,for your retirement visa you need a thai bank account with 800.000 baht but legaly you can't open a bank account without a workpermit. :D

If there’s a law, Ministerial Regulation, Bank of Thailand order or other government regulation prohibiting it, I have yet to see it. If you have a link to such official requirement, kindly post it.

Some banks have this requirement in their internal guidelines but when you ask them they cannot produce a copy of any official government rule as the basis for it. I know, I've tested it.

I didn't know this wasn't a law, don't read lawbooks so much anymore. But I think it is at least strange that banks shoot themself in the foot with their internal guidelines.

I went to Koh Samui immigration for my yearly visa renewal today. They didn't ask for a map or blue book or lease. As I just moved into a new place the other day I said that this was a change of address too. The change of address was simply a verbal statement and my writing my new address on the visa form.

I have had some problems getting bank clerks to understand I didn't need a work permit. I finally had the BKK office higher-ups call them and set them straight. They were very apologetic.

I may post this elsewhere as this is OT here, but I put enough in the bank to cover the 800K requirement 3 months ago. Some emergencies brought it down to 440K. I topped off to just over 800K again yesterday. They poured over my savings account books and would have seen the dip. They said nothing, and I had my visa within an hour.

I went to Northeast Immigration (Korat) for my visa extension (Marriage) last week. I had seen *somewhere* a requirement for a "hand-drawn map" to the residence...so I ginned on up in Visio. The interviewer seemed impressed...but I have not met a Thai person yet who can read a map.

The map has always been required for the marriage extension, at least for the first extension, and some offices have recently begun to ask for it also for other types of extension and some may soon want it for 90-day address reports. I guess that immigration headquarters has issued a new internal guideline on this and where an office cannot find the map in the file or are too busy to look for it they just ask for a new map again, or the guideline may say that they should now ask for it also with repeat applications, or the guideline may not be very specific buy to play it safe some immigration officers ask for the map at every opportunity.

It is advisable then to keep a copy of your map on your computer and bring along a copy on every visit to immigration just in case they ask for it.
