Yep, when it comes to the Land Code, the term "Alien" seems to be used in the English version. This little site has it all:

http://www.samuiforsale.com/leasehold.htm#Using

----------------(OFF TOPIC)--------------

(For the linguistic readers)

Why is the word "alien" used to label foreigners?

This word is used in many places, even in the Immigration,

As far as my knowledge of Thinglish goes, an "alien" is a creature of another planet.

Like the "green martians".

Has the Thai language no other and more appropriate word to describe "people from another country"?

"Foreigners" comes to mind.........

US Citizens have/had "special" benefits as has been confirmed by another poster.

I'm well aware that US citizens are not a "race" as such, but the different treatment of citizens of one country to citizens of another country makes this law "racist" IMHO.

Anyhow, as I said before, a growing part of the Thai population is made of children of foreigners.

And these "foreign" citizens are growing in number every year.

It is only a matter of time for the Thai politicians to realize that this law is outdated and absurd.

Have a nice weekend

While it is indeed a sad story. It is far from an isolated incident in this country. I fear it is played out all too often (but rarely making the news, for it would hurt the cash cow of tourism).

How many 'suicides' happen here where the foreign husband suddenly pulls a "jumper" off a high building, (often times with his hands tied behind his back, his throat slit, a plastic bag taped around his head, and after shooting himself twice in the back of the head as well)?

Lest one forgets; Greed knows no country boundary, does not discriminate by age, race, color, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. It is, in other words, an equal opportunity affliction.

While greed may be universal, I believe the way it is expressed may indeed vary according to all of the variables you list. I would add "culture".

this is a very sad case, considering many people KNEW he was going to be murdered?

why was he not given protection, or consult the British Embassy? and why did his friends only give him a stun gun?, very sad indeed.

RIP

Hi,

Perhaps they only had a stun gun to give?

I have no doubt that this guy would still be alive if the neighbours who "knew " he was going to be killed had taken the trouble to tell the guys wife that if anything happened to the guy they and others would tell the police and the embassy of their fear and what they knew. :o

But hey, the "lets not get involved" attitude rules does'nt it?

he didnt deserve it

but he did look for it marrying the poorest and least educated girl he could find.

She's also pretty ugly so definitely had a very mediocre life and as a result will be susceptible to go mad over money.. Sad truth.

What a load of <deleted>!

Many live what you discribe as a mediocre life but wouldnt dream of murdering someone, as for her being ugly being a factor that is utter nonsense.

The jails are full of people and I have no doubt a large number of criminals are "pretty people" who feel frustrated that thier good looks has not been an instant passport to wealth.

Wealthy people often commit murders, some of the reasons might be greed ,jelousy, anger at rejection, anger at not getting others to comply with their demands, imaginary slight, or on occasions because they think they are so clever they wont get caught and do it just for the buzz.

Many extemely wealthy people do not lead a mediocre life yet end still up behind bars ( MRs Toxic's recent conviction is a prime example ) not because they are desparately poor but because they were just plain greedy.

If we were to accept there was any merit to your thinking ( and there is not) then we had better lock up all the unattactive people on public safety grounds. :o:D

Comments (6)Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below?

I'm sorry for the man and the awful way he met his end, but when these naive men ever learn ?- Jean, Blackburn, Lancs, 11/8/2008 19:45 Don't these types of men realise that the Thia women only want them for their money? I doubt if a much younger women would want an old, foreign man if they didn't have money!- Elaine, Bournemouth, UK, 11/8/2008 19:22

Comments from UK women show teir indifference and dare I say "scathing contempt" for the savage (And it was savage) murder of a human being.

Quote: JEAN. above.

I must be naive also since I live with a Thai also? Reason??? learned after 22years of marriage I could never keep my UK wife happy.

Quote: Elaine. Above

My Quote: I doubt if a much younger man would want an old, foreign WOMAN if they didn't have money?

For Gawds sake a man has lost his life, his children a father?? Yet, in your, (UK female) eyes he is to blame

Split with my wife a few years ago, defining moment was when she took a piece of 4 x 2 timber to my face and head when I was sleeping in bed. Eldest son saved me and called the ambulance. (She could not remember in the morning when she woke up in the cells). If roles were reversed methinks I would still be eating porridge.

Since I worked abroad, she kept the house, cars shares etc..............................sounds familar???? I arrrived in Thailand with my job and pension. Now she wants me back since she is assest rich, cash poor. Me, cash rich but assests poor. If I go back she gets a % of my cash.......I get no assests....sounds familar.

What I am trying to say (badly). Thai women may/do kill you. My wife tried to kill me (she still cannot remember??) failed. But she tried then to break me financially and mentally.

In other words....Not one female has the moral high ground. They are what their husband earns, or is worth when he dies, whether natural or not.

R.I.P. Ian Beeston, not your time to go. May god take care

Hi,

Elaine and Jean are female, and no doubt when they selected their partners financial security for the future played a big part in their choice.

Animals select the strongest partners, humans are no different.

Amazes me that so many divorced ladies who loudly express offensive views and objections on men marrying youger women when in reality they have often obtained thier nice homes /cars and financial security from thier ex husbands efforts.

Not all ladies I know, but a large percentage for sure.

Some girls have been treated like crap all their lives by local guys (not saying that's the case here) and then they get treated like crap by foreign guys (not saying that's the case here). In the latter case, the potential insurance/property/etc. windfall is just a little too tempting for uneducated gals (and guys) who never had anything and had long ago decided that shortcuts instead of hard work was the key to a comfortable life.

:D

Post a distasteful slur on a murder victim (with a weak disclaimer) AND THEN put a smiley face as a bizarre talisman against any criticism that may ensue.

Well spotted :o

What about the stereotype English man who is now no more.

The only reason these women feel they can comment is not, I suspect, because they are fat or ugly but because they know right from wrong (men are not going to admit to the world the set up in Thailand). I have travelled there plenty, the badness, greed and underlying corruption cannot and should not go without comment.

This man and others like him deserves pity as do his friends and family at this time.

If we follow your thinking then all scots people eat porridge for breakfast, are tight fisted drunks and the men wear kilts?

I have lived in LOS and been visiting there for over 20 years, and the more I visit the more I learn.

By the way are you not the lady who recently posted an item about enjoying the excitement and danger of visiting dubious areas in LOS?

If you roll in crap then you will carry that smell with you as you walk away.

Badness, greed exist's in glasgow, edinborough , manchester ,london, and just about every town and village in the uk and likely the wider world.

My last question is, as you suggest Thailand is such a crap place why do you keep going back there then?

A more introspective question to incidents like this is why farang men have such terrible taste in women and why do they go absolutely braindead when it comes to a person's character in another culture?

It's not rocket science to piece together that your lovely wife is a scheming liar.

hi,

If you look at the divorce rates around the world then your theory is dead in the water.

This murder has nothing whatsoever to do with culture although itmight sell more papers if we say it does.

I dont know where you are coming from but the sooner you return the happpier you might be.

What amazes me is how the hel_l do they think they can get away with it. Hardly the perfect crime,

I don't follow such threads about another fahrang who spend all is money on a house that he cannot own (the land), a big car on his teerak's name, etc. , knowing all too well that displaying such a wealth in Thailand is the recipe for a short life and end-up dead after several hours of agony.

But the quote from TBWG makes the fahrang community look even dumber.

Can you name 1 case where the Thai wife and her lover/family planned such a crime and REALLY got convicted for it?

As far as I have been following the thread about the Canadian guy who was cool blooded murdered in Ranong by the "uncle", the wife cashed a lot of money and sold all his properties (his Harley Davidson) and according what I have read a few weeks ago, she is walking free on the streets. And that's where she will be forever. Not behind bars. That privilege is kept for fahrangs who does anything wrong in Thailand.

If you want to convince yourself that Thailand will do justice after the murder of a fahrang by a Thai, keep living on dreams.

But don't try to convince others who knows that you are LESS THAN NOTHING in Thailand and this will forever be that way.

The safest way to live in Thailand is simply to not display any wealth and dont spend big sums of money on something you can never own.

My condoleances to the guy who had to spnd 7 hours in agony before dying.

Keep it in the bank and die rich rather than enjoying spending your own money?

From your avitar it would seem you were a coalminer, if so that may explain why you dont like opening your eyes above ground.

If your theory were correct ( and it is not) it would seem to me that the wife is more likely to bump you off sooner if as you suggest men keep all your wealth in the bank rather than ejoying it.

Being the richest man in the graveyard might appeal to you but it does nothing for me, but perhaps you are from yorkshire

where some miners are known to follow the old philosophy of keeping their women piss poor and pregnant in order to keep them under control? :o

I am amazed at some of these posts.Hang on a minute petite who is uneducated,it certainly sounds like you,are you ugly too.

The replys are typical of sad uk ladies who do not understand Thailand and have never been to the place.

Nothing worse than a woman scorned though, thai or english.

So you're one of those ugly old guys married to a uneducated girl?

im sorry, but you don't have to be jealous because i am 22 and good looking and athletic...just envious is enough

Being with someone that is uneducated, ugly and very poor does mean that you took the first person that finaly came to you.. nothing wrong there though.. as my mom always said.. every dirty wipe needs its dirty wipe.

im just saying, if you're a old guy with money and you marry some girl from the ghetto no matter in what country.. u'll get fuc_ked one way or an other.

At 22 years of age I am not suprised you claim you are good looking and athletic.

Being good looking and athletic is not enough to get you through life (unless of course you want to marry some rich old bird for her money) as you will learn over time.

As a young man of 22 who still quote's his mother you obviously still have a lot to learn from the real world.

Those old guys you are slagging off were likley also good looking young guys once, now they have experience and wealth to draw from, where as you are still relying on advice from your Mommy!

If you follow you Mom's advice on women you are heading for a safe but dull and boring liftime of regret, I doubt your dads advice would be the same advice as that from your mom.

From your posting is seems you have only aquired enough life experiences to fit into an egg cup and still have room left for the egg.

Save this posting and respond to it in 10 years time, I hope by then you will have had enough of your own life experience's to realise how foolish your posting above really is. :o

I did not say that I thought Thailand was a "crap" place (don't like the expression which you have used twice here) but expressed concern at the underlying corruption and unaccountability that exists there.

Certainly there is badness everywhere also corruption but it is usually (not always) dealt with according to the laws the land. In the other topic you refer to I did not state that I travel to Thailand for danger. For your information since you have chosen to question my character, I have worked hard all my life to afford to be able to travel and not just to Thailand ( i.e. have never profitted from a marriage or relationship financially as you have suggested some women do) and I like the climate in Thailand compared to wintertime here in the U.K. and yes the laid back atmosphere. The dubious areas you mention which are advertised as tourist areas which I have visited I was accompanied by younger members of my family who know how to conduct themselves thank you but also thankfully know how to enjoy themselves.

I asked if people travel there because of the danger as I was questioning the "pull" Thailand has on tourists particularly in view of the growing incidence of lives being lost there and incidentally noticed that you came in at the end of the topic, which seems to be a trick of yours, in order to rubbish it. No matter.

In this topic I was defending and indeed welcoming the right of the media to publish this incident and although I believe Thailand has its magic and understand why people visit in their droves, publication may serve as a warning to unwary or first time visitors.

I thought when you get older, you are suppose to be smarter/wiser - because you have been through life, and seen most of the good, bad, and ugly already.

According to you, generally, this is not the case?

And when you get to be 60 and lonely

Do you have to get married, just to be happy and not lonely?

Can you just have a good companionship without that “piece of paper“? If you still have some of those naggy feelings about your partner.

Hi,

As a woman you above all should know the need for security in a relationship, trust is the name of the game, if you are not prepared to trust your partner ( married or otherwise) you dont really have much of a relationship in the first place in my opinion.

Marriage is not so much about the religious aspect these days but rather about legally confirming ther commitment and responsibility to/for each other.

Are you really saying that the people in thai/farang relationships should not take reasonable provision for their partners

security should they die unexpectedly.

In case you havent noticed, death usually does not book a prior appointment!

If it did then tax men aound the world would be much the poorer and very disappointed.

Sure sometimes things dont go the way we hope they will, but on the other hand if we follow the road you seem to be advocating then the reationship these guys will have with their ladies will be little more than a rental/leae arrangement.

That may suit some people but not all.

Back to the drawing board for you I think

So we are now blaming the victim for his murder on the basis that he was a fool?!

[/color]Why - Because very few Thais are viscous, scheming scum like the two who murdered this old man.

Uhhhhhhhhhh??????????

Come over to my house and I will show a lot of Thais who have gambled all their assets and their money on the lottery or in a casino (I'm talking about sums ranging form 500,000 Baht to 4 mill. Baht and more).

Gambling is almost a religion on Asia.

garro, The truth seems to hurt you here! That must be the reason for the brainless attempt of a insult.

I've never been hurt by a Thai girl and I don't drink, that's why I see the real situation.

Do your own survey, look around you and see things that are in front of your own eyes. Take off your rose tinted glasses and find the facts, do you really think that most of the Thai women love their farang husbands? It's rare to find one who does, but you probably think most of them do, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

garro,

Perhaps he bats for the other team which may possibly, explain in part, why he see's what others dont? :o

In 10 years time he will still claim to be drop-dead gorgeous. In 30 years time when he joins me in the ranks of the ugly old men with an uneducated girl who is 20 years my junior, his egg cup might just be overflowing.

PS - I was drop-dead gorgeous at 22, 32 and 42 - only now have I realised that I am not and probably was not !

Are you serious?

I have lived in richness, i have lived on the street. i went to college, i travelled around the world. i have a kid, i have a good income that can only grow. i have done about everything besides going bareback on a hiv infected girl, bungee and sky diving which are 3 things im far from interested in.

My life consists in taking care of my girlfriend and the kid, working 4hours MAX a day, playing with my dogs, going to the gym, taking vacations WHEN i want, anywhere in the world to party with friends for a week or 2 as many times as i want during the year. in 2-3years i won't even have to work my businesses will work themselves out.

I doubt that other guy i responded to as anything on me or anything that i could be envious of.

as far as partying and social experiences goes i spent 20 thousand us in 4months partying there, could be done for my whole life.

i dont see why so many people try to bring me down, im sure theres others like me with way more experience and life joy than the 60year old that try to defend the guy from the article taking the first girl that would marry him for his money. Im 100% sure being alone and spending 1k baht on a night out with a girl 3 times a week is way better than buying a house/car for someone much less pretty to show you everyday how meaningless you are.

getting married is supose to mean something.
