I am hoping to come to thailand and take a certification program for teaching english but have only a highschool education. Can anyone tell me if its even worth doing. Will I be able to get a teaching job without a degree?

Should be easy to get a job. Don't worry. Some of the best teachers don't have degrees and some of the worst have PhD's!

However, Sunrise, i think you may possibly be giving the OP some false hope. You dont know where he wants to work, what level etc. The fact is OP, yes, in certain provinces, it IS possible to work without a degree, but i wouldnt describe it as being easy and not to worry. You may not find legal work. Any work you do find may be at the bottom end of the scale. And of course, with the new regulations that may or may not come into force during the next 12 months, no one knows what the future holds.

If you're thinking of just coming for a short period of time, dont mind working either in Bangkok or in a very rural province, then yes - take your chance. Other than that, i'd say forget it.

Thailand is a good place to come to get your TEFL certification - check out some of the board sponsors for that. Hope this helps.

If you really want to find out if it's possible - email your resume to every educational establishment you can find and see how many positive responses you get.

Thanks for the advice! I have family living in phuket and was hoping to find a teaching job there.

Ok. In Phuket, i would say that your chances of securing a legal, contracted position in a school, either private or government, are pretty much nil. Unless you have a significant amount of relevant experience. Then the chances might be somewhere like 10 percent.

At our school in Phuket, you wouldnt even get an interview as we know we just cannot process a work permit for you.

Some of the language schools may or may not be able to offer work, but this is often as a 'freelancer' i.e. someone getting paid just for the contact hours they teach (250 baht an hour by the way). You'd have to ask individual language schools if they can employ you and give you a work permit - i believe the rules of employment for language schools differ slightly from government/private schools. Some language schools won't offer you a work permit. This is illegal for them to do so, and illegal for you to work without one. Really - it is.

However, please understand that in Phuket, if you have no degree, no TEFl and no experience, you are at the bottom of a pretty big pile.

Good luck anyway.

As i m sure will have been suggested to you already, you may want to consider seeking advice and information about doing a degree course, either at a place in Thailand (usually bangkok) or online with a universiy back home.

Neither option is a quick fix for your problem - but if you're serious about teaching here, it's what you need to do as a minimum.

8. Topics on the question of degrees/no degrees for teaching English or other subjects are currently restricted as they have been over-discussed and Thai government policy is not currently clear.

Yup. Closed. Please check recent similar topics or do a search; you'll get pretty much the same info as they've told you in this thread- no guarantees, still seems like it's possible, etc.
