There's a thread at the top of this page that has a lot of detail about this. The UAE is extremely harsh compared to other countries when it comes to getting caught with any amount of illegal drugs. 4 years is generally the minimum sentence handed out for possession (and people complain about Thailand's drug sentencing). If you have a good lawyer, family & political support, you may be able to get out earlier.

I'm amazed at the stories of so many people that "forgot" they had xxxx amount of marijuana in their pockets before getting on a flight.

It also amazes me how so many people think that if they can get away with smoking a joint in (UK/USA/Canada/Holland/etc), they should be able to do it anywhere in the world.

Prisons in the ME and Asia tend to provide a very rude awakening for those people.

(Note: I transit through Dubai 6+ times a year. Never had a problem, but then, I don't do drugs and rarely carry anything more than some over the counter anti-acid tablets)
