One of those rare breed of MPs who actually go into parliament and have no desire to get on the greasy pole. He was a great character and a wonderful human being. I remember only too clearly sitting in the Strangers' Gallery listening to those debates. I shall always be indebted to those like Leo Abse and Roy Jenkins (the then Home Secretary) who pushed through so much of the liberal legislation that we now take for granted. MP Abse's efforts impacted the entire so-called civilized world and his work has great pertinenence for gay people everywhere, regardless of nationality.
