Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

Featured Replies

just a hypothetical question.

i am just an average english bloke with an average paying job and no real savings. I get married to a thai and she wants me to live in thailand with her. I believe i can get a 1 yr visa due to being married to a thai. i have been told that to qualify for this we have to show proof of joint income of x baht.

is this correct and if so what monthly income is required??

You can obtain a multi entry non immigrant O visa without financial tests. But that only allows visits of up to 90 days each (but can be one after another).

For family extension of stay you require a joint income of 40k baht per month. Foreign source as per Embassy letterhead and local by tax payment receipts from previous year to date.

You can not work in Thailand without a work permit (job specific). Unless you have teaching degree expect you may find it difficult finding work/pay enough to provide for future.

How do you propose to support yourself here with no real savings? where are you from and how old are you ?

the only thing that i can think of at the moment (apart from her moving to UK) would be to start a small business. however, i am led to believe that i might have to employ a thai to do the work as being the business owner does not necessarily mean i can get a work permit. seeing as i am a photographer here in the UK that would be my first choice of business. and i am 39.

I understand the dream of wanting to live in Thailand but it's an economically imprudent decision. There are way less good paying jobs here. Make your fortune in the west and retire here.

living in thailand is not the be all and end all for me......i am just collecting options for what to do if the hypothetical wife wanted to stay in thailand........thanks for the info so far guys

If your wife has a business, you can work for her and qualify for a work permit etc. Start researching Somtom recipes so your wife will hire you. Hypothetically, of course.

Seriously though, whatever you decide, good luck to you and your wife!

what if i bought an existing business, a bar or restaurant or guesthouse......would we still need an income of 40000 per month or would it be based on the business turn over or profit?

To extend your stay for family reasons the only option available for you is 40k per month income. There are other options for stay such as work, education and such but for family it is 40k.

... I do stay in Thailand for about 10 years. I have two children. One is 4 years and one is 6 month old. Now I wanted to get a visa information in the Bangkok Immigration. Guess what, they just look my german passport from outside and send me out. Same they did to my german friend, who lifes here longer than me and has familiy with children.

You see, nothing is shure, the Thai can put you out of the country at any moment, only your money will stay in the land of smiles.

Yes, it does. See this post he made in a topic that had been dormant for almost a year:
