It also seems that many Thai males are 'tooled up' when stopped and searched on routine matters.e.g no helmet,overladen etc. In fact this type of crime appears more prevalent week by week. What we don't read are follow up court reports,and I just question what type of sentences these guys are getting to deter them and others from repeating this type of offence ?

Given the notorious standard of reporting by Pattaya's media they probably end up being locked up for "Contempt of Court". BB

August 27, 200817 yr A lot depends on 'who' you are. If you are from a rich and influential family who are well connected with the legal and police system; money can get you out of jail fast. Before anyone moans about this, it works for farang as well. If you have enough money here in Thailand then it is possible 'To get away with murder'. There have been news reports on this forum about such cases. Crime against farang are higher profile and rape and murder will attract a sentence of many years for a 'poor' Thai man/woman. Also drug offences, even some small crimes involving just a few pills will bring a lengthy sentence for a 'poor' Thai man/woman especially with previous form. Stabbings are often domestic disputes, so carry hopelessly inadequate sentences, maybe just a small fine, and events recorded. Again, shootings are often either gang-related or mafia-related. The Thai system mentality is for them just to wipe themselves out. Often a minor crime might have catastrophic consequences, a handbag theft/necklace snatch might lead to a serious RTA. In these cases the sentence is often inadequate. To receive justice here in Thailand one also needs money and connections. These are just my observations and facts that I have learned from talking about crime in Pattaya with law enforcement officers. Feedback is welcome.
August 27, 200817 yr There must be something to what Libya says, so often with these crime stories you read "and the miscreant is well-known to police with a lengthy history" and it does beg the question, well, why the fu_k are they still out robbing and shooting people? This new generation of thugs seem to be from families of means, they all have their hopped-up motorbikes, none of them appear to work but they can stay out all night drinking and taking drugs, it would appear they just get slapped on the wrist, only to come back and repeat the same kind of behavior again.
August 27, 200817 yr There was a recent media report from Bangkok over the conviction & sentecing of an Aussie who had been in a shootout with an American last year , the American lost the duel. The argument went from words to guns (Both 'Tooled' up) The sentence was 2 years 9 months. Do you think think it would be far greater in UK , USA , Australia ????
August 27, 200817 yr The question of why there is no follow up reporting was asked and answered in one of the papers a while back. What the paper said was that while arrest reports are easily obtainable and public, the court system is much more closed to the press in Thailand. The press doesn't have the same access to court records and hearings as in the west. Also, as noted, many many cases are settled with fines or bribes before they ever reach trial.
August 27, 200817 yr My wifes cousin was murdered several months ago in Issan.He was 18. His Mum is very poor and with the husband out of the picture , plus money going towards the police from the the family of the murderers(who have links with the police themselves), its not shaping up too well.
