Educational Visa

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an ED Visa valid until May 09 with multiple entry. I first arrived in Thailand in July 08 so I have been stamped up until Oct 08 (90days) by which I was under the impression that I had to leave the country to do a 'visa run' to get stamped another 90 days. However is it possible to visit the immigration office in Krabi to get this renewed? After all the visa in my passport is valid for a year and is all paid for, so is it actually necessary to leave the counrtry every 90 days? Thank you

Yes, you must leave and re-enter the country on or before the date your 90 day permission stamp in your passport expires with a non-immigrant visa.

The non immigrant visa is valid for entry only, you are permitted to stay each time for a maximum of 90 days.

When you go to a local Thai immigration dept you can apply to Extend your Permission to Stay. There are some demanding paperwork requirements depending on which of the 29 categories (if any) you are eligible to apply under. This is a completely different process.

Yep. Multi entry with each entry being up to 90 days.

I thought with a one-year ED visa (even multi-entry) you only had to go along to immigration (e.g. in BKK) with your school papers and pay your 1900 THB every 90 days?

(Hence the "no visa runs required" in the Walen ad)

It would be nice to tell us how your Thai language studies are going.

Winning?

Talking, reading, writing?

This is my understanding also. Perhaps the OP isn't attending classes to qualify for "internal" extension. I would think if this is not the case, the school should be assisting in every way to make the 90 days renewal more painless in order to retain a student.

I'm surprised he has to leave too.

A multi entry visa, of any type, only allows 90 day stay (with exception of retirement OA).

The Thai language school process is for you to obtain an extension of stay (not a multi entry visa) and that can then be extended but only for 90 days at a time (vice the normal one year of full education).

Students with a school that qualifies can use either system. But if they do not qualify for extension of stay the 90 day visa/border runs would be required.
