Hearing Aids/audiologists

I wear hearing aids and would like to know about anyones recommendations or experiences with audiologists and hearing aid repair/replacement in Thailand. I will be staying in Udon for about 6 months starting in November and for me the loss of a hearing aid can be a real problem. I have thought about buying a backup set here in the states but thought that the cost might be substantially less in Thailand. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here's just one source of info, reckon most major hospitals would also have their sources.

You could consult with the only Doctorate level American trained audiologist in Thailand. That would be me....

FYI the given source is not an Audiologist, and ENT "YES," and "audiologist "No." As far as I know, there is no such thing as a "Hearing Specialist." No degrees etc that state "Hearing Specialist" and in Thailand there is no BCHIS at this time. BCHIS is means, Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, which in America the criteria for that is a H.School diploma and a 1 or 2 year aprenticeship under a someone with a BCHIS. A individual with a BCHIS is commonly refered to as a hearing aid dealer, and sometimes they like to call themselves "Hearing Specialist" among many other terms.. ie Audioprostheologist

more on that http://www.audiology.org/publications/docu...osthologist.htm

ENT and Audiology training is vastly different. For example, a doctorate in Audiology means just that..... a doctorate in a specific area, while an ENT must focus on Ear, Nose and Throat in essentially the same amount of academic time. Then in practice the ENT again focusses on the Ears - Nose & Throat, while and audiologist, day in and day out, focusses on one area, the auditory system.

Just stumbled on this thread. I also wear hearing aids and bought digital hearing aids a few years ago in Soi 22 Bangkok. I find the people there very friendly and helpful. I get my ears cleaned every few months when in Bkk. I also get hearing aids cleaned. :)

I also wear hearing aids once in a while. Mine are Bernafon, and I am looking for the little wax filters they require (I think Oticon may work, as well).

Contace Intemex (sp) for your Bernafon and Oticon needs. Small co. but owned by a polite woman, that got her hearin aid dealers license out of Australia. So she does have a fair amount of English.

"Intemex?" Some strange www sites pop up in a web search. Try the spelling again?

I'd be interested in knowing how prices of hearing aids in Thailand compare to the US/elsewhere. Also, any updated suggestions on places to go/not to go in Bangkok would be appreciated.

I'm a military veteran with a service-connected hearing loss (moderate) and would like to find a good hearing aid/clinic to address my needs.

The Intimex people were not efficient to deal with on the phone at all. Just as they ignored emails (why have a website and email address if your company ignores it), conversations on the phone went no where and callbacks never occurred. This went on for several weeks, all to no conclusion. And BTW, not a language problem...my Thai SO was making the calls for me...a business person.

I finally went to the Intimex "store" at the modern office building right at the Lumphini subway station...don't remember the name of the building, but it is mostly health-related companies and stores. Once there they were very helpful...cleaned my hearing aids, installed the wax filters, and stocked me up on batteries.

I struck out trying to find a capable hearing aid shop in Udon or Khonkaen. Looks like I'll have to travel to Bangkok to find a shop that can answer detailed questions about various hearing aids. I've read the Eartone, 20 Sukhumvit 22, comments. If anyone has any other experience to offer.....I'm all ears (what's left of them).

If I'm going to pluck down a wad of cash, I'd prefer dealing with a shop that has capable salespeople handling their products.

All comments/pms welcome
