Having taken Deedee from Soidogrescue 3 years ago (she was aged 9 months at the time), she has been living in Bangkok in my house, and has come to learn how to be a dog. She's still very timid with strangers, but is happy with people who talk and act gently towards her, once she's seen them a few times. And giving her food helps speed up the process (loves cooked egg-yolks).

Unfortunately, after 3 years, I'm being forced to work overseas in multiple locations - which means I can't take her with me. This is devastating for me, because I know what a lovely dog she has become, and I don't know if there is anyone out there who would be interested in re-homing a nearly 4-year old, slightly neurotic female medium-sized (11kg) street dog.

Ideally, she would be better placed in a home which already has a dog, who can be more dominant (but please, not nasty). That would definitely help her feel more confident about the humans in the house, if she sees another dog being treated well.

Not to go into too much detail, but:

1. She is house-trained. But there were accidents at first, of course, and she still has a little corner of the house by the doorway to the roof, which is newspaper covered because she goes there (pees only) in emergency situations.

2. She gets to know women more quickly than men. I believe that's because women are gentler.

3. She is still street-smart - walks happily on a leash, but I walk her daily on Sukhumvit 33 without a leash.

4. She happily potters about the soi I live in, but if called in an encouraging way, or a loud clap, she'll cheerily bound back down the soi wagging her tail.

5. She loves other dogs and animals. She tries to play with the cats in the street, not realising they're not other dogs. And she loves to chase birds, wondering how they manage to escape 'up there'.

6. She sleeps on my bed at night, and wakes me up with a lick on the nose in the morning. However, she's happy to sleep anywhere. When I'm not at home, she sleeps on the floor of my housemate's room, or on the floor in the lounge, and she never whines or scratches to get in anywhere.

7. More about point 6 - she is a very gentle dog. If the gap in the door is not wide enough, she will not push through. She'll sit there and wait until it's opened (or sometimes lie there, ad go to sleep). If she's outside your bedroom door, she won't whine to get in. Again, she'll sit or lie there and wait.

8. Her hair does not grow very quickly. I take her to the groomers twice-monthly. And it takes a long time for her to smell after a shampoo, because her legs are long so tend to avoid the dirt on the ground.

9. She has a full vaccination history, and was vaccinated last month so she's good for the year.

10. She currently lives with another dog, and either ignores her or is subservient towards her when they play. In the street if she sees other dogs, she ignores them. Unless they look like trouble and come down 'her' soi, then she'll chase them, but always wagging her tail. If they don't move, she just sniffs them and walks away - tail up.

So if anyone is able to take on a timid-at-first, and not a very sentimentally-attachable kind of dog (if you're there she's happy, if you're not there she's happy), preferable with some outdoor space so she can come and go as she likes, please let me know.

There is no immediate hurry, as I will be back and forth to Bangkok over the coming months. I would just feel more comfortable having her successfully rehomed as soon as possible (to stop my guilty conscience, perhaps?).

If you would like to PM me, that would be great. I am leaving the country tomorrow (my first trip away, hence the concern over Deedee's future), and will be back 3rd week in October if anyone would like me to bring her to you, or if you would like to visit her in Sukhumvit.

I hope I can find someone out there - or if you know someone who might be interested, please forward the details.

Many thanks.

deedee is sooo cute! did you find her a new home already?

that is why i'm very reluctant to rehome my dogs in thailand... most people don't stay here for good... and/or go for extended holidays back home...

also, it is so hard to find a new good home in the first place :o

good luck for deedee, i hope she is fine :D

Hi elfe,

Thanks for your reply. I've been really fortunate that a Thai friend from Bangkok asked his Mum and Dad in Chiang Mai to take her, and they are happy to. They have a large garden, two Thai friendly Thai dogs they've adopted and live with them so Deedee'll have a couple of friends to play with. I just need to drive her up there when I'm back in Bangkok. It couldn't be more perfect.

I'm in Paris and it's a very dog-friendly city, but only if the dog's personality is a lot less skittish. Too traumatic for her to come here, I'm sure. Anyway it (hopefully) all worked out in the end.
