Morchit is the northern bus station.

You want the southern bus station,

My Wife tells me where but I cannot write in English.

Someone will come along soon who can.

Here we go.

Or this. Sai Tai.

Try to get a gov't VIP bus, not private. :o

Yep Sai Tai over the Pinklao bridge or just get a VIP bus/boat deal from Khaosan just as cheap if not cheaper.

I don't think Gov't VIP buses leave from KS rd!

Do they?

By far the cheapest mode of transport is the bus. From northern Thailand and Bangkok, head south for Surat Thani. These buses nearly always travel at night and there are different classes on offer. The best choice would be the government VIP 24 seat buses. You can buy a ticket direct to Koh Samui with the price including the ferry. We recommend against buying tickets from travel agents in Khao San Road.

The journey from Bangkok to Surat Thani takes 10 hours. If you would like to sleep on the journey we recommend a sweater to combat the air-conditioning (VIP buses will provide blankets), and earplugs to combat the movie that will be playing through the night!

Buy your ticket at the BKK bus terminal only, not from a travel agent.

New Southern Bus Terminal at telephone: 02-4345557 or visit http://www.transport.co.th/main.asp

edit: The Southern Bus Terminal is located on Borommarat Chonnani Road, approximately 2 km. from the Pinklao Bridge. In addition to the Southern buses (Hua Hin, Phuket), buses bound for Western provinces like Nakhon Pathom and Kanchanaburi leave from here. Telephone: Call 02 391 2504, 02 391 8097.

Lite Beer, Is that address up to date?

The Southern Bus terminal moved about 3 months ago I think. It is now a lot further than 2km from the Pinkloa Bridge but on the same direction heading out. Sign posts to it are minimal to absolutely fking ridiculous.

Yeah nope not Gov't run but I suppose you could call these "VIP" buses afterall they still have those pretty curtains.. Just the same shit really except you don't get the custom 5 Thai guys on the stage VCD, instead you get the 5 loud pissed up Swedes sat in front of you.. In anycase it's still compfy enough to pretend to sleep.

To be honest I would not know where it is by personal experience as it has been a long time since I used it.

This information should be up to date.

I went to the new Southern Bus Terminal. It's quite big and a new structure compared to the other one in Pinklao near that big mall that's pretty crappy and not much of a major terminal at all. It looks like buses still leave from that one, but ya, best to go to the new one. It's quite large. And yes, it's complicated to get there unless you know where it is exactly or know the area. I was with a Thai friend when we went there. He had to direct the taxi driver as the driver was trying to go to the old Southern bus terminal.

Thankyou very much for all your replies the informaiton is most helpful.

Have you considered the overnight sleeper train? Much more comfortable than the bus.

You can buy a combined train / ferry ticket from Hualompong station.

Agree on the train. :D

The scarey bit is the ferry which is overloaded and a ltd number of life-jackets to go around.

That ferry service doesn't have a good safety record.

There is no alternative! :o

Right, after Suratthani it's a nightmare.

Last year took a bus from KhaoSan to Chumphon, and a catamaran to Kho Tao, Phangan and Samui.

Best option so far, and I think I've done them all.

The Lomprayah company run a VIP bus and catamaran twice daily from Bangkok to Koh Tao departing at 6am to arrive at 2.30pm and again at 8.30pm to arrive at 8.30am.

You can book at their Bangkok office on soi Rambuttri which is parallel to Khaosan road or at any travel agent in the area.

sbk's brother-in-law was "deeply unimpressed", however. :D

Used to be able to get 1,000 off Bangkok Airways' :o exorbitant fare by taking the first or last flight of the day.

Be aware that they charge heavy tax to leave Samui.
