...Thai law says you should carry your passport at all times...

I’ve been looking for that law for years. Could you post a link to it, or at least give the full title and year of the law to help me find it?

I'd bet there's no specific law that says such. However, if you could dig into the Ministry of Interior's regulations and look up the one, in Thai, that says perhaps "everyone" age 15 or over must carry their ID card. The passport "rule" is just a logical extension of this.

However, if the MOI reg says carry their "baht passason," "baht prachamthua," that's pretty specific, but still a passport for foreigners is the closest thing I/we/they have to it.

A passport is the most important document you have when you travel and stay in another country and mostly the only way as proof of your identity.

But in case you stay in for ex. Pattaya and not travel anywhere else and not want to carry your passport in case you should be a victim for a pick pocketer for ex. it can be a good idea to make photocopies of the relevant pages of your passport, Main page, visa page, recent stamp page and the TM 6 card or the departure card.

If you for ex. have Thai driver license its another proof of your identity and mostly acceptable in case a checkup by the police for ex.

In case for applying for bank account you need your passport and other important "business" whit immigration or other governments in the Kingdom, always take your passport whit you.

Have a pleasant time in Thailand.

Regards!

You could try colour copying the picture page of your passport and reducing it to a credit card size and then on the reverse copying your current visa and then laminating this. Big C North Pattaya do this for a think ฿100 on the second floor near the phone shops.

Together with as 'Bengt' suggest if you have your driving license with you this has your passport number on also. I have never encountered any problems. On a risk reward ratio I feel much more comfortable doing this than lugging my passport everywhere.

Good idea Chopper! I do something similar; just scan the relevant pages in passport, reduce in size then arrange in (Adobe) Photoshop and print.

FWIW even without laminating but neatly filed within its own plastic (credit card sized) pocket in my wallet, I too feel comfortable with just this measure when moving around LOS. :o

The best suggestion I have heard is to carry an expired passport as ID.

I just carry my driving license in Udon. I have only been asked for my passport a few times, mostly when caught in roadblocks in Issan, and once on the bus to the Cambodian border.

This myth has been debunked many times already.

P.S. I like choppers idea.

All right and well, but disagree with this particular sentence.

My driver license show name, date of birth, address ,and the identification 13 digit number:6++++++++++++,for a farang, not the passport number;not even the nationality! :o

Hmmmm you want to carry it around than do be it. However when you lose it - royal pain in the arse to replace, not mention carrying it around in humid conditions - literally ruins it after so long.

All right and well, but disagree with this particular sentence.

The new Thai 'E Licenses' do have your passport number on them, the old ones don't.

I can't figure out which comment you're referring to.

Which myth has been debunked?

I'm looking at my current 5-year Thai license which was issued in 2537, expires 2552, next February. It does included my old passport #, preceded by the #71.

That "71" might indicated a nationality, U.S., for example. Anyone else got their older style license handy? If so, what's it say?

Oops, correction, fast fingers again....

The number preceding my passport number is 14, repeat 14.

Sorry, don't know where that 71 came from, except used to live down Suk 71 long ago.
